Welcome back, artists! In First Grade, our creative adventure continues as students build on the skills they developed in Kindergarten while becoming more confident, curious, and independent creators.
This year, young artists will begin making more intentional artistic choices as they explore new materials, techniques, and creative challenges. Through drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage, and mixed media, students will strengthen both their artistic skills and their ability to communicate ideas through visual art.
Each unit is thoughtfully designed around the Wisconsin Visual Arts Standards and guided by an Essential Question that encourages students to observe, imagine, create, and reflect. Students will discover how artists use the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to tell stories, solve problems, and express emotions in unique and meaningful ways.
Throughout the year, First Grade artists will:
Develop confidence using a variety of art materials and techniques.
Practice careful observation and creative problem solving.
Learn about artists from different cultures, time periods, and styles.
Build fine motor skills through increasingly detailed artwork.
Share ideas, collaborate with classmates, and celebrate one another's creativity.
Reflect on their artistic choices and recognize that every artist has their own unique style.
Our art studio is a place where creativity is celebrated, curiosity is encouraged, and mistakes are seen as an important part of learning. Students will be challenged to think outside the box, try new ideas, and discover that art is not about being perfect, it's about expressing yourself, growing as a creator, and enjoying the process.
This year, we'll continue building the confidence, imagination, and creative thinking skills that will inspire our artists for years to come.
Let's create something amazing together!
