Second Grade is where creativity begins to take flight! This year, students continue building the artistic skills they've developed while learning to think more like real artists, planning, experimenting, reflecting, and discovering new ways to express their ideas.
Our art studio is a creative space where imagination is celebrated and every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Students will explore a wide variety of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printmaking, fibers, and mixed media while developing greater confidence and independence with each project.
Every lesson is thoughtfully designed around the Wisconsin Visual Arts Standards and guided by an Essential Question that encourages students to make meaningful connections between art, history, culture, nature, and their own lives. Students will begin to understand that artists don't just make pictures, they communicate ideas, tell stories, solve problems, and inspire others.
Throughout the year, Second Grade artists will:
Strengthen their understanding of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.
Practice planning artwork before beginning a final piece.
Experiment with new materials and techniques while embracing creative risks.
Explore artists and artistic traditions from around the world.
Develop craftsmanship by learning to slow down, pay attention to details, and take pride in their work.
Reflect on their creative process and explain the choices they made as artists.
In our art room, students are encouraged to ask questions, think outside the box, and celebrate both successes and mistakes as valuable parts of learning. Every project is designed to challenge young artists to stretch their imagination while building confidence in their own creative voice.
This year, our artists will continue discovering that creativity is a skill that grows with practice and that the best works of art often begin with a single idea and the courage to try something new.
Students will learn that artists slow down, look closely, and notice details in the world around them.

Students will explore how artists use repetition, design, and visual choices to communicate.
