In the 1800's, Charles Frederick Worth opened the first authentic haute couture house in Paris. His royalty connections gained him recognition and customers. The first fashion show was in the 1860’s. An interesting fact about fashion is that the handbag was originally designed and used to help women attract men. Fashion can be a key part of someone's identity and they can express themselves by using fashion or wearing stylish clothes. It can help us create an idea of what the person's personality is. People usually spend about $1,434 on clothes per year.
Makeup dates all the way back to about 600 BCE by the Egyptians. They believed that makeup made you more godly and made the gods think they were more appealing.
Makeup was also used to represent their wealth and used by men and women. In 4,000 BCE Greek and Rome started wearing makeup too! They wanted to look more natural and used light makeup like blush and powdered foundation by mixing fruits with dye.
In 3000 to 600 BCE the Chinese women used nail polish to show their social status. The highest rank of royalty would wear gold or silver and the lower class would wear black or red. The lowest class would not be able to wear nail polish at all. They wore very white colored foundations to separate themselves from the workers.
It all changed in the 1500’s when the Elizabethan concept gained fame. Women plucked their eyebrows and whitened their skin with vinegar and white lead. They tinted their cheeks with egg whites and even brought up rumors about how makeup brang their life expectancy down 29 years.
In the 1900’s Queen Victoria believed that makeup was very unlady-like. Many girls listened to her and a woman began backlash against women who wear makeup so they pitched their cheeks and lips for a cherry tint. Many women or girls that wore makeup where looked down upon until Hollywood stars started encouraging women to do makeup again by producing more movies with their makeup done.
Finally, now girls wear makeup to express themselves or to enhance their beauty. People can now where makeup without being judged and can even not wear any makeup at all. We have foundations, blush, concealer, highlighter and much more makeup to explore with! And this is the history of makeup.
