Part of establishing a culture of student agency in your classroom is making self-assessment integral to the fabric of your classroom. Having students assess their progress is an excellent way to build your learning partnerships with students and provides great discussion for feedback conferences. This can be done on individual topics and/or projects and also as a whole. When nearing a reporting period, it is a great idea to have students assess where they are in comparison to their learning goals and what their next steps would be. Learners need to feel this self-assessment is not just performative; rather it is a meaningful part of the overall assessment process and that their voice counts in how their learning is measured.
Here are some forms of self-assessment we have used in our classroom:
Level of Understanding Rating Scale - we will often use this and have student put their Level of Understanding (LoU) on exit cards
Grow and a Glow (PDF)
Reporting Period Reflection (Google Docs)
We also often ask students to self-assess using the co-constructed success criteria they developed as well as in their digital portfolios.
