Learner Empowerment

Doing Regular Check-Ins with your students every few weeks can be a great way to get to know them and also give them a voice in the classroom environment. As we look to give students voice and agency, it is so important that we talk ALL our students into account and make sure we are also amplifying the quieter voices in the room. Giving students an opportunity to provide feedback and check in with you in a variety of different ways can account for learner variability. Here are some check-ins we've used successfully:

This simple prompt, based on work by Monte Syrie, reminds students how you want them to feel in the classroom and asks them to give feedback on how it's going. Here is a copy students could complete using Google Slides or you could print.

I Wish My Teacher Knew...

This prompt, based on work by Kyle Schwartz, asks students a simple question: What do they wish their teacher knew? This can be given out to all students. It can also be used with a box or folder that students always have access to and the teacher checks regularly. Click here for a PDF version to accompany a box or folder.
