Certain learning goals for our students are delineated in the curriculum; however that doesn't mean students can't have voice and choice over their own learning goals as well. Having students set learning goals that are personal to them and their learning journey can certainly help them take ownership over the learning process. Having students set goals not based on a mark they want to attain but rather what they want to learn can help them see themselves as learners and think in a metacognitive lens.
At key points throughout the year, we will ask our students to set learning goals and we will reflect on these throughout the year. These are also powerful goals to have conversations about during feedback conferences. Here are a few examples of ways in which we help students set personalized learning goals.
