Literacy Enrichment and Academic Readiness for Newcomers
The Literacy Enrichment and Academic Readiness for Newcomers (LEARN) program supports newcomer students who arrive with significant interruptions or gaps in formal schooling. The program is designed to build foundational skills, academic readiness, and confidence while supporting students’ successful integration into the school system.
LEARN programming is offered at multiple grade levels and is tailored to students’ instructional and language needs.
Students in Grades 2–6 may access:
LEARN 1 Literacy
LEARN 1 Math
Instruction at this level focuses on developing foundational literacy and numeracy skills, building academic vocabulary, and supporting engagement in learning alongside peers.
Students in Grades 7–12 may access:
LEARN 1 Literacy
LEARN 1 Math
LEARN 2 Language Arts
LEARN 2 Math
LEARN 2 Science
LEARN 2 Social Studies
At the secondary level, LEARN provides structured, targeted instruction to support literacy development, subject-area learning, and academic skill building. Students receive ongoing support with transition into mainstream programming, with a focus on gradual integration into age-appropriate classes as readiness develops.
LEARN programming is grounded in culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and inclusive practices. LEARN teachers work collaboratively with school teams to ensure instruction is responsive to individual student needs, strengths, and experiences. Placement and programming decisions are made in consultation with families and are regularly reviewed to support student progress and successful participation in the regular curriculum.
