Global Citizenship

A global citizen is someone who is aware of and understands the wider world and their place in it.  Global citizenship is about encouraging young people to develop the knowledge, skills and values they  need to engage with the world. It is a way of thinking that helps to increase cultural awareness, explore local and global connections, identify social injustice and help individuals recognize that they have the power to act and influence the world around them.

Global citizenship can be achieved by keeping up with current events, having meaningful conversations with people from other backgrounds, trying new foods, travelling to other countries and being exposed to different cultures and languages. Learning about other cultures by means of global citizenship is the most effective way to appreciate commonalities among all humans which leads to intercultural competence and understanding.

It is essential that all students are provided with the cultural knowledge, skills and attitudes required to be engaged and productive global citizens. This can be achieved by providing curriculum, materials and resources to promote global citizenship, engaging students with experiences that reflect various worldviews and promoting acceptance and respect of cultural and linguistic diversity. It is also important to increase awareness of global issues and prepare students for participation in the global economy.
