Access to Curriculum

Newcomer students have a variety of education backgrounds and academic experiences. Newcomer students have a varying degree of proficiency and experience with the English language. Upon enrollment in NL schools, newcomer students must have age-appropriate grade placement as well as evaluation to determine if additional resources and support may be required for successful academic programming.

To ensure equitable access to all newcomers, it is important to provide appropriate placement evaluation, ensure access to EAL instruction, develop background skills and provide relevant resources. Equitable access may also be achieved through early intervention, programming to address education gaps and providing additional resources for students with interrupted formal education.
