NL Schools provides English as an Additional Language (EAL) programming and services for newcomer students in Kindergarten to Grade 12. For students who arrive with significant interruptions in formal schooling, we offer Literacy Enrichment and Academic Readiness for Newcomers (LEARN) program.
These programs are grounded in culturally responsive and inclusive practices and are designed to support students’ language and academic development while they learn alongside their peers. Classroom teachers are supported by EAL and LEARN educators, and NL Schools values and celebrates the cultural and linguistic diversity of its school communities.
To support newcomer students in developing English language proficiency and literacy skills so they can successfully access and engage with the NL Schools curriculum. Supports are provided for a period of time and are adjusted as students’ language skills and academic independence grow.
EAL services are available to:
Students born outside Canada whose first language is not English, and
Students born in Canada who speak a language or dialect other than Standard English.
EAL supports are available in all regions of Newfoundland and Labrador for students in Grades K–12 who qualify.
Services are needs-based and determined collaboratively by EAL staff and school teams.
EAL support may be delivered in person or virtually, depending on student need and location.
