Multicultural education supports all students by ensuring they see themselves reflected in the curriculum, classroom, and school community. Educators use culturally responsive pedagogy to affirm students’ identities, value linguistic and cultural diversity, and cultivate a strong sense of belonging and global awareness. The purpose of this work is to advance educational equity and improve outcomes for students from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds.
Effective multicultural education is embedded through intentional content integration, equity-focused instructional practices, bias reduction, and the cultivation of inclusive and empowering school cultures. This work requires educators to be culturally aware and proactive in creating learning environments that respond to the strengths, experiences, and needs of all learners.
With more than 3,000 newcomer students currently enrolled in our province and growing, the Multicultural Education Team has been established to support administrators, guidance counsellors, and educators. The team includes over 100 EAL and LEARN teachers, as well as multicultural education coaches and counsellors, who work collaboratively to support schools and classrooms. Our mandate is to provide direct instruction to students, offer ongoing professional learning and support to schools, and share practical strategies, tools, and resources that strengthen culturally responsive and inclusive school communities.
This website serves as a central hub for information and resources related to welcoming newcomers, cultural responsiveness, equity, and global citizenship. Content will be updated regularly in response to emerging needs, questions, and challenges identified by educators. We invite you to use this site as a key resource in supporting newcomer students and fostering inclusive school communities.
