Multicultural Education NL

WELCOME MESSAGE

Multicultural education helps all students see themselves in the curriculum and the classroom and fosters a global perspective and broad worldview for all students.  It includes strategies, practices, and pedagogical approaches that affirm students' identities and connectedness. Multicultural education introduces students to various cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and values. Its goal is to foster educational equity in the classroom and school by promoting success for students with culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds.

Multicultural education can be supported through content integration, prejudice elimination, an equity pedagogy, and an empowering school culture. It calls for educators to be culturally aware and strive to proactively create a culturally and linguistically responsive school environment.

Currently in our province, there are over 2200 newcomer students and numbers continue to rise. To reflect this rapid change in student demographics, a Multicultural Education team has been assembled to support administrators, guidance counsellors, and teachers.  Our mandate is to provide ongoing support to educators through professional learning opportunities, and sharing of effective strategies, tools, and resources to assist in creating a culturally responsive school and classroom environment.

This website offers information on welcoming newcomers, cultural responsiveness, equity, and global citizenship as well as links to professional learning seminars and informational resources. Content will be added on a continual basis to reflect questions and challenges brought forward by educators. This website will serve as a valuable resource as you welcome newcomers into your classrooms and schools.
