In December of 2020, I graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Strategic Communication and Innovation through Texas Tech University. Below you will find some of my course work with reflections on the tools I used and what I learned from that assignment.
For my capstone, I designed, completed, and presented original research at the intersection of public education and internal communications. Because I wanted my research to have an authentic and meaningful impact, I investigated the internal communication practices at my workplace, with the goal of making recommendations for improvement to the leadership in our Communications Department.
My three-method research -- a survey, interviews, and data analysis -- found that campus and team-level communication could be improved, while staff felt an overall satisfaction with district-level communication practices. Further, where communication was consistent, organized, clear, and centrally-located, staff felt more satisfied with communications and ultimately their jobs.
As a part of this project, I gained experience with project management, research, data collection, and data analysis, in addition to learning how to use Qualtrics. You can read the full report or view my final presentation here. Although I have already graduated, I am continuing to work with this data -- aiming to publish and present our findings at industry conferences.
For this project, I was tasked with creating a Brand Design Proposal for a small business over the course of a semester. This project coincided with the launch of a friend's business, Undercard Group, LLC, so I was able to gain authentic experience working with both a client and graphic designer (who was hired to create the logo). Through this project, I developed my skills in strategic branding, project management, graphic design, social media marketing, web development, user experience, and copywriting.
For this project, I researched and created a professional report about current best practices in Social Media Marketing. I completed this report by relying on both academic and industry-specific publications. Research and writing are two of my strengths, so I was grateful to complete this task with authentic application to industry practice as opposed to simply theory. While they are both important, I have come to rely on what I learned from this assignment in my communications and social media marketing work for both freelance clients and in my role as an Instructional Technologist.
Below you will find a director's treatment for a two-minute, story-based video highlighting the impact of Just for J's work. I was grateful to use my graduate work as a creative platform for my work as a volunteer ambassador and communications specialist with Just for J. Integrated with this director's treatment is a coordinated campaign designed to facilitate word-of-mouth marketing for the organization, including an app design, landing page, social media graphics, and mailers/prints. I used Canva for most of the design work, WeVideo for the 30-sec sample of the video, & Adobe Spark to host and share all of the project content.
Parts of this campaign, specifically a 30-sec version of the video and the social media graphics were used for Just for J's 2019 North Texas Giving Day, resulting in Just for J meeting and exceeded their goal, which was higher than any previous year.
In my Multimedia Storytelling course, we were tasked with creating an infographic that visualized data from our own lives, while sharing our story. I designed this using Canva and had a lot of fun making it. I included information from 16personlities, which is a tool I use often with students in my job, as well as Icons8 and AMCharts. I practiced special attention to spacing and wording, which are critical when visually representing data.
In my Research Methods course, we were assigned a group project where we collaboratively created a research proposal for Learn More Indiana. Through this, I reflected a lot on the parallels between academic and commercial research and writing. Additionally, I enjoyed collaborating with my classmates from a distance. While virtual collaboration is common in my job, it was a new experience for me to work with people I had never met before. This also introduced me to proper formatting and procedure for industry requests for information and proposals.
