Honors Chemistry
Honors Chemistry includes an in-depth study of basic concepts taught in Chemistry with emphasis on problem solving and laboratory. Honors Chemistry provides students opportunities to engage in higher level lab experiences that emphasize collection and analysis of complex data in order to produce high quality technical conclusions based on the data. Additional emphasis is placed on technical writing. Blended option available at select high schools. See section on blended courses for further clarification about this opportunity.
Course Expectations:
Chemistry is an applied science in which students are required to learn the concepts and then apply the information to various scenarios, reactions, and math problems. In Honors Chemistry, students are expected to work at an accelerated pace with on average 20-30 minutes of homework each day. Homework includes independent practice, memorization, math problems, EdPuzzles, virtual simulations, article reading, and lab analysis. There are 1-2 projects a year. Weekly quizzes, Unit Tests w/ multiple choice and FRQ sections, and cumulative Semester Exams.
The second semester is largely math based. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that students be enrolled in Algebra 2 or higher when taking Honors Chemistry.
