Course Description: The focus of Precalculus is advanced topics in Algebra and Trigonometry. Students will continue the study of variables and functions. This study will include exploring, analyzing, modeling and graphing data resulting in non-linear patterns, parent functions and inverse relationships, applications of various functions and their inverses, trigonometry, polar equations, sequences, series and parametrics. All topics are focused to prepare students for Calculus.
The anticipated sequence of topics is as follows:
1st Nine Weeks
Sequences and Series
Logarithmic and Exponential Functions
Transformations and Power Functions
Compositions and Inverse Functions
2nd Nine Weeks
Polynomial Functions
Rational Functions
Basic Trigonometry
Unit Circle
3rd Nine Weeks
Trigonometric Graphs
Trigonometric Equations
Trigonometric Identities
4th Nine Weeks
Polar Equations
Parametric
AP Test Preparation
● Classwork will be given frequently to increase the student’s understanding of the material. Classwork should be ready to check or turn in at the beginning of class on the following day. Any assignment not completed in class will become homework. Assignments should include work shown (a list of answers with no work is NOT acceptable) to receive full credit.
● It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed due to an absence. Any work assigned prior to an absence is to be turned in immediately upon the student’s return.
● Since quizzes and tests are announced in advance, students who are present on the day of the quiz/test will be expected to take it as scheduled. Students that are absent on the day of a quiz/test must complete it the day of their return to class. A unit calendar is available on Canvas.
Assessments & Retesting:
Tests and quizzes will be announced in advance. A unit calendar is available on Canvas.
A retest will be offered if a student wishes to improve their grade on a test if their score is less than 75.
The retest procedure for AP Precalculus is as follows:
● All assignments for the unit must be completed
● The student will attend a tutorial session with a precalculus teacher to correct the original test (no points will be awarded).
● The student will complete a retest review on Canvas and must score an 80 or higher
● The retest must be completed within 5 school days of posted test score.
● The higher of the two test grades up to an 75 will be recorded per district policy.
Test Correction points or extra credit will not be offered. If a student seeks to improve their grade, they have the option of retesting following the procedure given above. It is imperative that they keep up with the daily work and ask questions as we progress through a unit.
