Students can expect to spend approximately one hour outside class on course work.
Course Description: This course provides college-level work in Statistics. The course is divided into four major themes: exploratory analysis, planning a study, probability and statistical inference. Technology will be an integral part of the course. Students will be given the opportunity to take the Advanced Placement test in May and may earn college credit.
Course Outline:
Part I Exploring Data Normal Distributions Examining Relationships Two-Variable Data
Part II Producing Data
Part III Probability Random Variables Binomial and Geometric Distributions Sampling Distributions
Part IV Introduction to Inference Inference for Distributions Inference for Proportions Inference for Tables; Chi-Square Procedures Inference for Regression
Review for AP Exam
Course Grades:
Each nine weeks grade will be calculated as follows:
40% Homework/ Quizzes/Projects
60% Tests – if you do not do the review, you forfeit the chance for a retake. (There will be a replacement option available each quarter.)
Your semester grade will be calculated as follows: Average of 2 Quarter grades
Homework: This is your opportunity to practice and do a variety of problems. This is a “risk free” practice for you to comprehend the material. Students should seek to clarify those things their homework shows as errors.
Quizzes: Homework quizzes will be given. Most include 4-7 problems similar to homework problems. When we are working in groups, you are expected to stay on task, to maintain an appropriate level of conversation, to make sure that everyone in the group understands the problem, and to work together to find solutions. Please beware that words can hurt and think before you speak.
Tests: At least 3 tests will be given each nine weeks. Tests will be comprehensive and cumulative. There will be review questions on the test. Usually tests will be 10-12 multiple choice and 2 free response. (There will be a replacement option available each quarter.).
Assessments & Retesting: Announced quizzes will be given throughout each unit. One formative grade per unit shall be dropped if the student shows improvement on his/her test score.
Tests will be announced in advance. If you do not do the review, you forfeit the chance for a retake. Students should stow all electronic devices (other than a graphing calculator) to the designated (teacher monitored) location for the duration of any test. Devices will be allowed when all tests are turned in.
• Students caught using ANY electronic device during a test will have their test confiscated and appropriate consequences regarding any academic dishonesty will be assigned.
• Per district policy, a determination of academic dishonesty (cheating or copying) will be based on the judgment of the teacher and disciplinary and/or academic consequences for such actions will be determined by the teacher and campus administrator.
• Formative work will be accepted for a grade until the summative assignment for that content is completed.
A retest will be offered for any student on any given summative test. (scoring below a 75) The retest procedure for Statistics is as follows:
• If you do not do the review, you forfeit the chance for a retake.
• All homework for the unit must be completed before a retest will be made available.
• The student will attend a tutorial session with the teacher to correct the original test (no points will be awarded).
• Once posted in the grade book, students will have two (2) school days to request the opportunity to redo the assignment AND shall complete the new assessment/assignment with five (5) school days of the original grade posting in the grade book.
• While the retests will cover the same concepts covered in class for any particular unit, students should expect the format of the retest to include short answer type questions. • Another option for replacement is a quarter test which will replace one low summative. (it is an optional test – not required).
