Selling the Public Inolvement Standards by Bob McAlister, Public Member

"Throughout this Autumn I have been on the local Conference circuit. Speaking about the detail and merits of the new Public Involvement Standards. Being a founding member of the Standards Development Partnership, I have an advantage when it comes to speaking on the subject. I know where the journey began and where we are going. Context, content and collaboration details flow readily from our colourful 'least busy' slides.

Moving to the audience side- the message is well received. The knowledge is welcomed because the arrival of the Standards has been so well signposted. The four nations participation in the design seems cohesive to the audiences in this era of division. Also, after the well-publicised and active consultation, those who 'do' public involvement feel that they can get on board because they helped shape it. In consultation with our Test Beds and Freestyle adopters we will further refine the detail through the next few months. I have limited experience of sales, but if I were to venture into that field I would be confident about selling the Public Standards to new or existing customers. They will do what they say on the slide."

Latest news from the Standards Development Partnership

Members of the Standards Development Partnership met on 09 August to finalise the work plan and activities for the rest of the 2018/18 financial year. The activities include:

-  Developing a communications plan and reviewing how we use the Standards website to expand our links       with interested audiences

- Collaborating with others in the UK and elsewhere to record and report on the impact of the standards on involvement in research - what differences are they making?

- Reviewing the governance, membership and resourcing of the Standards Development Partnership itself, to make sure it’s fit for purpose and ready to fully support the 2019/20 roll-out of the standards.

- Making changes to and finalising the standards and indicators before the planned implementation in 2019/20.

Update on the Standards test bed projects

The new national standards for public involvement in research are being piloted over the course of 2018/19 by 10 test bed sites. The test beds were selected earlier this year and a workshop was convened on 23 April 2018, with the following aims:

- To create a shared identity as a ‘Standards Test Bed’ and a sense of belonging as a group

- To familiarise participants with the Standards and the supporting materials, and discuss practical arrangements

- To initiate discussions about and between test beds including a diagnostic assessment of teams and identify any issues

The workshop was facilitated by members of the Standards Development Partnership and one of the outcomes was to schedule quarterly teleconferences for test bed teams and Standards Partnership members to share progress, learning, achievements and challenges during the testing phase.

The first such teleconference took place on 10 July 2018 and was attended by representatives from each test bed site and by Partnership members. Read the key messages from meeting here: Key Messages from July Test Bed Teleconference.

Are you already using the national standards for public involvement in research? Would you be willing to share your learning?

Then register as a FREESTYLER!

In March 2018, we launched a set of national standards and indicators for public involvement in research.  We are currently putting the standards to the test by working with 10 test bed projects spanning different organisations, regions and research settings to put the standards into practice.

We are also looking for people, groups, teams and organisations to get involved in a more informal way to test the standards in their own working environment. If you are already using the standards or are interested in applying them to your work, we would love to hear from you! Tell us about your project/plans by registering as a freestyle project!

You can also see what other freestyle projects are doing by clicking here.

Closing deadline: 31.08.2018.
