Would you like qualifications that offer hands-on experience? If so, college may be right for you.
For some of our students, going to college is their first choice.
Colleges (Further Education) provide you with the opportunity to study vocational qualifications. These are qualifications that allow you to get hands on experience of a job that you are interested in. For example, if you would like to study to be a car mechanic or hairdresser.
Although they do offer A levels, the qualifications are likely to be BTEC or new T levels. The advantage is that these qualifications rely less on exams and more on coursework or practical assessments.
The advantage of going to college is that you are able to study subjects that you would not normally study at school and which are likely to be aligned to a job you want to do. However, you do need to be aware of a couple of things:
Level 2 qualifications are the equivalent of GCSEs, level 3 are equivalent to A levels
College courses are often triple qualifications i.e. you only study one subject
It may limit your choices as the qualifications often specialise in one area
Although applying is easy, you will need to find out where the college courses you are interested in is being taught and when the application process starts. It is also a good idea to visit the college on an open day to make sure that you'll be happy there. Lastly, you'll also need to consider things like how you will get to and from college.
