The UK has over 395 Higher Education institutions, offering over 50,000 courses for you to choose from. So if your interest is Surf Science, Ethical Hacking, Fashion Bags and Accessories or Viking Studies - then there is a course for you.
Most of these courses will be need to be applied for through the Universities and Colleges Admission Service - UCAS
Before applying to a course there are a number of things to consider:
What does the course cover?
What qualifications are required?
Do you want to live away from home?
What sort of university is it?
Living in Bedworth and Bulkington, we are lucky to have several major universities within easy reach. Our nearest universities are Coventry and Warwick. Both are very different - Coventry is a city centre university, with different buildings in and around Coventry. In contrast, Warwick is a campus university, with everything on one site outside of the city centre.
For students attending Nicholas Chamberlaine School, there are benefits to applying to local universities. Warwick offer a financial support scheme called Warwick Scholars and the University of Birmingham offers a scheme called A2B that lowers the grades required for courses. For example, rather than requiring AAB, the University will accept ABB.
Perhaps the biggest thing that puts people off university is the cost. Although the figures sound scary, this shouldn't put you off. This is a really long video, but it goes into a lot of detail. The most important fact is that university is affordable for everyone.
You will not be asked to pay anything up-front. Your tuition fees will be paid to the university directly and you will receive a loan for living costs.
You only start to pay the money back once you earn more than £26,575. Even then you will only pay pack 9% of anything earned above that amount - so if you earn £27,000 you will only pay back £38.25!
After 30 years the debt will be wiped out, regardless if you have paid it back or not.
There are no debt collectors to worry about, all money is taken directly from your salary.
