Overview
For all Grade levels---this 9 weeks---we focus on classroom procedures (walking the blue line, jogging (slow steady pace), freezing on the whistle, squad spots, tennis shoe points, stretching, and warm ups).
Our main SKILL focus for the first 4 weeks is Locomotor Skills--I want them to learn the definition (ways that our feet, move our body from one place to another), examples (walk, jog, skip, hop, jump, gallop, etc), and understand what activities we are doing to practice these skills!
Week 1--Classroom procedures, whistle cues, squad spots, start stretching routine, free dance, Octopus Tag, team Hoop activity. With Kindergarten...we talk about personal space and general space. Learning how to move safely in all areas.
Week 2--Review Classroom procedures. Teach the isolation/dance warm up!
1st Jogging assessment---Red, Yellow, Green (they jog until I stop them at GREEN---if they stop sooner than my whistle they get red or yellow...the goal is to jog as long as they can without stopping or walking---the goal is not to go as fast as you can on this assessment but to jog at a slow steady pace for the allotted amount of time). We go into more depth on locomotor skills---checking for understanding of the definition, examples, and activities!
For Kindergarten we focus on free movement and following cues!
Week 3--Jogging assessment Make-Ups. Start checking for mastery of locomotor skills. continue rock, paper, scissors game. PE talk---pacing (slow steady pace) and controlling your breathing while jogging. Introduce Hula Hooping, Jumping the hoops, and rock and roll the hoops!
Wednesdays---Weeks 1, 2, and 3--review locomotor skills---Teach "tag" and Octapus Tag---dancing, hokey pokey
Week 4--Finish verbally checking for mastery of locomotor skills. With kindergarten--I want them to be able to tell me examples of locomotor skills and try to tell me anything part of the definition that they remember. We do our sprint pre-assessment...shifting our focus to...running as fast as you can! We finish up our locomotor unit. At the end they do freeze dance, octopus tag and free time with hula hoops.
Week 5 starts our Hand Eye Coordination Unit and they are taught our stations rotations for PE
Wednesdays---weeks 4, 5, 6, 7---Finish all locomotor skills assessments, finish all baselines, finish team building, make sure that all classes have gotten instruction on hula hoop, jump, roll! Kindergarten---Kick one stationary ball at a time, kick stationary ball with a partner--kick and trap it, kick and trap it. Free kick time. Learn to run and kick like in kickball!
Week 5--Introduction to Hand Eye Coordination (when our hands and our eyes work together) We start out with balloon play. They are to hug their balloons, I give the instruction on what to do with the balloon, they have time to work on that skill...when I blow the whistle...they hug again and wait for the next skill. We go through 5-8 skills with the balloons, ending with free balloon play! After the balloons---we switch to scarves. The students learn the words/actions...toss and catch. With Kindergarten...I want them to remember the words scarves, balloons, toss and catch! Scarves...toss and catch, both and catch, toss spin and catch, switch and catch, and free play!
Week 6---we review what Hand Eye coordination is. The students are introduced to the paddle/yarn ball---we work on balancing the yarn ball on the paddle while standing, move on to walking and trying to balance the yarn ball on the paddle, and then move up to little bounces with the paddle...trying to count how many in a row they can get! This is a challenge for them so we talk about the challenge and that we should not get upset if we can't do it---just to keep trying! We finish up with reviewing balloons and scarves (understanding toss and catch). Frisbee toss---palms up, thumb on top, elbow out, touch your belly, step and release, reach for your partner
Week 7--Continuing on with hand eye coordination. This is our ball familiarization day! We are discussing similarities and differences between several types of balls that will be used in PE. We will use descriptive words like small, medium, big, large, tiny, soft, hard, squishy, smooth, rough, bouncy, shiny, etc. We focus on 2 skills with each ball---toss and catch, bounce and catch. We use the ball pit balls, wiffle ball, yarn ball, volleyball, and basketball for this lesson. We go through structured self play, free self play, free group play, and partner play.
Week 8--This week we are doing our 2nd jogging test and adding another level. The students are trying to just do better than they did on the pre-test on the 2nd week. The color blue is added...giving them a challenge step to move themselves a little!
Continuing on with hand eye coordination. We play with beach balls, the big beach ball, and add ribbon sticks to the mix.
Week 9-- Hand/eye coordination stations. As students are doing their walking warm up in the beginning of class---I call them up 1 at a time to see if they can tell me any words we have learned in this unit...hand/eye coordination, toss and catch, scarves, balloons, paddle ball...they get points accordingly. Stations incorporate balloons, paddle ball, ring toss (underhand toss), basketball, football (overhand toss), scarves, ribbon sticks, etc.
