This page includes information regarding the application and renewal of substitute permits by state requirement. Information is also included regarding application fee. If your state is not listed below, there are no additional requirements that need to be met before you are in the classroom and you may disregard this page. Substitutes can apply for a one, three, or five year authorization permit. Only those who obtain a five-year authorization are eligible to be a long-term substitute.
Application fee: $60 (one-year authorization) or $90 (three and five-year authorizations)
Expiration: expiration date depends on type of authorization and expire based on the issue date (I.e., 3-Year Substitute Authorization that is issued on 05/06/2022 expires on 05/06/2025).

Expiration: Substitute permits are valid for three years starting on the day the application is paid for.

How to apply/renew: Louisiana law requires all substitutes teachers hold a Teaching Authorization (TA) for the parish they are working for. NHA will apply for the TA upon hire.
Expiration: a Teaching Authorization is valid only for the period in which you are employed by NHA.
A Daily Substitute Permit in the state of Michigan only covers assignments at the school for which the permit is applied for. If you choose to be a substitute at multiple NHA schools within Michigan, you will need one permit per school, but will only need to pay the application fee for one school.
Application fee: $45
How to apply/renew: NHA applies for the Daily Substitute Permit on your behalf through the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS). You will need to login to your account to pay the fee https://mdoe.state.mi.us/moecs/login.aspx.
NHA will apply for your next year's permit after July 1 once you have completed a Conviction Disclosure Form. You will then receive an email notification that the permit is not valid until the fee is paid.
Expiration: Permits are valid from the date it is issued to the following August 31st.
Substitutes can apply for either a one or five year license.

Expiration: the Substitute license for short-term substitutes is valid for three years. No coursework is required to renew.
