Make sure you bring your driver's license in the school with you each day you sub so that you can sign into the Raptor system. If you are subbing for a full day, make sure you bring a lunch with you in case you aren't able to leave campus for lunch.
It may also be helpful to create your own substitute "toolkit" that you bring with you to each job with materials and resources you may need throughout the day (you may find that the classrooms are equipped with all of the tools you need as you continue to sub, but this may be beneficial especially when you are first starting and are unfamiliar with the school). Some example tools to include in this kit could be extra classroom supplies in case you are unable to locate the ones provided by the teacher, a list of expectations if there is not one provided to you, a list of attention-getting or on-task techniques, or anything else you think would help you feel prepared.
Though this time will vary depending on which school you are working at (you should reach out to your registrar for more specific information), we recommend arriving at least half an hour before the school day starts so you have adequate time to get acclimated in the classroom and can be ready for the students once they start arriving.
If students need to call home for any reason, they should be sent down to the office to use the office phone. Only teachers and staff should be using classroom phones.
Dress code for teachers is business casual. Many schools do not allow jeans other than on specific days of the week or special "dress down" days. If you are unsure whether certain clothing is appropriate for teaching or not, it is best to ask your registrar beforehand to see if the school has any specific requirements.
Each school has a technology liason that is available to assist with any technology needs. Your registrar should provide you with the best way to contact them throughout the day should you need to. If you need help logging into a program, your grade level teammates may be able to assist you.
As on-call employees, substitute teachers are not eligible for benefits or paid time off.
Your registrar should provide names and contact information for at least two people who you can contact if needed throughout the day. Generally, this will be your grade-level dean and your grade-level team members.
Each state will have their own requirements and process regarding substitute permits. Please visit our substitute permits page for more information.
Because each school is a little different in their day-to-day operations, the following list of questions are ones that we believe it would be beneficial for each substitute to ask their registrar prior to their first day of teaching.
What time should I arrive at the school?
What time will I be able to leave?
Where should I park?
What time is my lunch and am I able to leave campus during that time? Will I have access to a microwave?
Who should I contact if I have questions throughout the day?
Is there anything I need to make sure I bring with me on my first day?
Where can I find information on emergency procedures?
What is the dress code for substitutes?
Is there a time I could come in prior to my first day to receive a tour of the school and meet the principal and deans?
