When you walk into the school on your first time, please report directly to the front office and get signed in for the day (your registrar will help walk you through that process). At that point, your registrar will walk you to the room you will be teaching in for the day and give you a brief tour so you know where essential rooms are located. If you have not already scheduled a tour before your first day with your registrar, we recommend you reach out to help you feel confident when you arrive that morning. For those who are unable to do so, to the right is a brief, generic tour of one of our schools.
*Each school's schedule is slightly different so any times or order of events mentioned below are subject to be different based on the school you are in. Please contact your registrar ahead of time to understand their needs as it pertains to when you arrive and when you are able to leave.
Though this may change based on registrar preference and student arrival time, we recommend that you arrive in the office at least 30 minutes before the school day starts so you can ensure you have everything you need and so you can get answers to any last minute questions you may have. This will also guarantee that you are present when students start arriving for the day.
Locate any documents such as lesson plans, daily schedule, class roster, or phone numbers that may have been provided to you. Please look through all of these to be sure you are prepared and understand what is expected of you throughout the day. If there is any information that you do not understand or if you have additional questions that those documents do not address, talk with your grade level teammates.
Make sure your name is written on the board along with a simple plan for the day's lesson. While this is not essential, it will greatly assist in keeping you and the students on-task throughout the day.
If there is a "do-now" activity provided, project the instructions on the board so students can get started immediately. Make sure any required materials are also prepped and ready for students to grab when they arrive.
Once students start to arrive, please stand by the door to greet them.
Once the school day has officially started, briefly introduce yourself to the students and explain that you will be filling in for their teacher for the day.
Make sure you take attendance and briefly go over rules so you and the students are clear on what is expected of them.
Once you have finished with introductions and attendance, begin following the provided plan and jump into the lesson for the day. Be sure to follow the lesson plans and daily schedule as closely as possible. If you are subbing for a grade that switches classrooms, make sure you are dismissing the students to transition on time and mark attendance on class rosters. These attendance sheets will need to be turned in to the office before you leave at the end of the day.
Once you have reached the end of the day, please follow the dismissal procedures and seek out assistance from your teammates or dean as needed.
Once all of the students have been dismissed, please make sure the room is neat and tidy and that any notes for the classroom teacher are clearly available for them once they return. When you leave the classroom, be sure to bring any additional attendance sheets or other necessary documents back down to the office and speak with your dean or registrar to be sure you are all set and ready to go.
