This unit will provide you with the fundamental skills needed to solve equations and inequalities, and apply them in real-life scenarios. During this unit, you can expect to learn various methods for solving and graphing both equations and inequalities.
To ensure your success, we will engage in interactive discussions, group activities, and problem-solving exercises. You will have the opportunity to practice your skills through homework assignments and quizzes.
This unit will rely a lot on being able to solve equations. I highly suggest that if you are struggling with this, you check out the Solving Equations Review tab located at the top of this page.
Lesson 1
The first lesson is all about writing and solving 1 and 2 step equations. It is important to understand what is means to keep an equation balanced, and to know what steps to do first. We have all heard of PEMDAS, but when we solving equations we must do these steps backwards. When we are writing equations, we are doing what we call a translation from words to an algebraic equation.
Lesson 2 and 3
In lessons 2 and 3, we started talking about Literal Equations. These are equations that contain more than 1 variable. This could be an equation that contain both x and y, or it could be an equations that has only variables and no numbers. We solve them the same way! Here are some videos showing how to solve for the desired variable.
Lesson 4
The second half of Unit 4 is about solving inequalities. These aren't much different than solving equations, but they do have some properties of their own.
Lesson 5
In lesson 5, we practice writing and solving inequalities. Writing inequalities will rely on us being able to interpret important phrases that we will see in the problem. Solving inequalities is very similar to solving equations, but we have to be able to remember our properties of inequalities that we learned in lesson 4.
I have also included a video about graphing 1-variable inequalities.
Lesson 6
Lesson 6 is completely review and practice! Here are some links to khan academy resources that will be helpful.
