We are super excited to announce that NEXUS Beats is back! Learners have already signed up for the event with 17 bands so far and they are already busy practising in our music studios daily. The buzz around the department is on fire as we gear up to what promises to be another amazing event.
A huge congratulations to Jinguo for the poster design and for everyone that entered the design competition.
Parents, family and friends as well as the wider community are invited to attend the event which will take place on Thursday 16 February, 4.30pm in the Auditorium. Please note, no tickets are required this year!
This year the music and drama departments have been scouring Singapore for opportunities to take our budding musicians and actors to shows, gigs and concerts. In January we were pleased to secure tickets for "We Will Rock You' at the Esplanade Theatre. It was an amazing show made even better by the lovely people at the Esplanade upgrading our tickets from the "Circle" to the 8th row of the stalls! We were certainly amongst the action as we sang along to Queen's hit songs and danced away to the finale.
We will continue to be looking for events in Singapore so watch this space and check your inboxes....."Frozen" is next!
As part of the Secondary music curriculum all learners have the chance to learn the basics on the guitar, ukulele, bass guitar, keyboard and drum kit. Using these skills in lessons to perform a range of songs using chords, riffs and accompaniment patterns.
In year 9 the learners select an instrument, a group of learners to collaborate with, a genre of music, a song and put together their own ensemble. Many of these comprise of rock bands however often we have folk bands, flexi-bands and even Chinese music ensembles. The aim of the "Musical Futures" unit is to build on many of the IB learner profile attributes such as 'principled', 'risk taker', 'open minded', 'communicator', 'inquirer'. The unit is very much learner led where they select the instruments, music and rehearse independently. (However of course some teacher input/support is offered if necessary!)
The unit finishes with performances to one another in class and is a lovely way to showcase everyones efforts as well as providing a platform for learners to build confidence in performing in front of an audience. This year we decided to offer a much grander platform to year 9 as some bands volunteered to take their 'risk-taking' and 'confidence building' to the next level by performing infron of all year 9 in the Audition last Thursday lunchtime. It was such a fun event with most of year 9 turning out to support. 7 bands and 34 performers on stage.
Next steps include some of these bands wanting to perform as part of Wellbeing week or even Nexus Beats! Well done to everyone involved it has been a great unit and we are super proud of you all!
Learners can view photos here as they have access through their school gmail accounts.
Next Wednesday is Wellbeing week and on Wednesday we will be highlighting opportunities where playing an instrument and performing supports wellbeing. Studies show that just playing an instrument (it doesn't have to be something as aggressive as the drums), can lower your blood pressure, reduce stress and in turn, help with anxiety and depression. Remember, it's important to keep a healthy mind as well as a healthy body, so let your creativity shine.
Playing an Instrument can:
Keeps the mind sharp
Enhances coordination
Regulates mood
Sharpens your reading skills
Improves respiratory system
Increases listening skills
Promotes sense of achievement
Boosts concentration
Reforms time management skills
Aids good posture
Mathematics
Making new Friendships
As part of Wellbeing week on Wednesday please look out for the following:
Choir Performances before school
Karaoke in the Canteen - Snacktime
Rock Bands in the East Cafeteria - Lunchtime
Secondary Choir during lunch - Auditorium
Our Y11's are nearly coming to a close with their IGCSE Performances taking place on Tuesday 21 February. With 18 learners taking IGCSE music this is our biggest cohort yet and once again the standare of our musicians presented continues to get better and better each year. Over the next few weeks you will spot some of them performing as part of the Friday morning "Musical Maestros" series at the Eco Cafe. Do stop on your way into school to listen to their wonderful music and show your support; it's a great way to start a Friday with a coffee in your hand!
