Our music department has been a hive of activity this term with over 200 learners having individual instrumental lessons and finally our music ensembles and CCA's starting in our Primary school. We have had our group photos for the yearbook and our music ensembles have videoed performances of their chosen song which is currently being edited and being prepared to share with our NEXUS families.
Meanwhile our Primary music teachers Mr Chris, Ms Tash and Mr Andrew have been busy inside the music classrooms too, with units of work focused on different musical genres and cultures; linked to the year group's Unit of Inquiry where appropriate.
Please see below some highlights of what's been happening in the music classroom this term, there is also learner work and performances shared on the individual Seesaw pages, with mini activities to share with parents if you didn't manage to get around to it during the Learner Conferences.

Nursery and Kindergarden
Nursery and Kindergarten learners have been busy taking part in a dramatic play exploring Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals. Listening to a variety of classical music inspired by animals such as swan, tortoise, and lion, learners identified and described their feelings evoked by orchestral music, fast/slow tempo, and loud/soft dynamics of each piece.

Year 1 and 2
Year 1 learners have been working to compose and notate a piece of music using long/short symbols and simple drawings. Some learners challenged themselves to create music using percussive instruments and used traditional music notations to notate a simple rhythm.
Year 2 learners explored 'Peter and the Wolf, a classic folktale' to understand the concept of telling a story through music. Through this fun unit, learners have learned the musical qualities of orchestral instruments and instrument families they belong in.

Year 3 and 4
Year 3 started off the term exploring ukulele strumming patterns, chords and finger picking patterns followed by a creative unit about storytelling through music. Year 4 started off the term with Chinese drums, and then violin, playing open string melodies, pizzicato and arco. We then moved on to learn about digital technology and music through the use of Garageband, creating a track and sharing it with the class.
Year 5 and 6
Year 5 started off the term with violin first finger melodies, playing pizzicato and arco, we then moved onto form and structure in music using the xylophones and exploring binary, ternary and rondo form. Year 6 have been exploring the pentatonic mode (the 5 note scale) through the music of Gamelan, from Indonesia, and China. Working as a whole class, and in small groups, learners composed and performed heterophonic melodies - where a melody is played by many instruments, with different variations simultaneously (Gamelan). In Chinese music, learners explored structure and rhythm, composing their own melodies and adding a suitable (drone) accompaniment.
