School Day

The school day starts at 08:20. It can take quite a few minutes to get from the school entrance to homerooms or tutor groups. With this in mind, our school gates are open and our teachers are on duty from 08:00. Supporting learners to arrive at school with time to get to their homeroom or tutor groups makes for a positive start to the day and sets everyone up for the learning ahead. Unfortunately, arriving at school for 08:20 means that learners are late for their first session.

We strongly encourage learners to arrive on site NO LATER THAN 08:10 to make sure they have sufficient time to make their way to the Learning Hubs. Learners who arrive late MUST go to Learner Services upon arrival.

From Monday to Thursday, school finishes at 15:25. On a Friday, it is 14:25 - this is every Friday to enable our teachers to collaborate and plan. If your child is in Year 1 to Year 4 - Please ensure you have arranged for your child to be picked up at 14:25 on Fridays (14:20 for Nursery and Kindergarten).

Unless you have made previous arrangements, our learners from Nursery to Year 4 can only be picked up by a parent or guardian. We cannot allow them to leave with anyone else without your permission. If anyone else is meeting them, please let your child's teacher know, so they can be quickly released at the end of the day.

Thank you for your support.

Secondary Uniform

The current uniform guidelines have been in place since before COVID restrictions and are not new. COVID restrictions prevented us from asking learners to change in communal spaces hence we let learners wear PE shorts on the days they had PE. Restrictions have now changed and learners are now able to change which is better for hygiene so we want learners to follow normal procedures. Uniform for lessons and PE kit for PE lessons. We are sorry if this has caught some of you by surprise and we do try to make expectations clear in the Parent / Learner handbooks.

Please ensure your child has the correct uniform.

Summer 2022 iGCSE Results

Learners who were entered for iGCSE assessments in June 2022 will be able to access their results online at the following times:

Cambridge: 1pm on the 18th of August

EDEXCEL: 1pm on the 25th of August

Learners who sat their exams at Nexus have already been given the details they need to access the results. If they are having any problems logging on to the web pages they are asked to contact our Examinations Officer Anna Sykes at sykes.a.@nexus.edu.sg

If you or your child have any questions about results in specific subjects, we ask that you speak to the Learning Area Leader for that subject. If the results have led to your child reconsidering IBDP subject options, this should be discussed with the IBDP Coordinator Vicky Holdcroft.

IGCSE Examinations 2023

Please note that the IGCSE examination boards do not confirm the timetable until Term 3. It is worth noting these have run from April to the end of June and you may want to delay booking any flights until the schedule is confirmed. Nexus has no control over these dates and they can run on public holidays and into the summer holidays. We will share the schedule as soon as it is available.

Nexus holds trial examinations for Year 11 learners from 9th January to 20th January and for Year 10 learners from 10th April to 20th April. These are deliberately placed to allow maximum teaching to have occurred before the assessments to ensure realistic experiences for learners and authentic feedback on their performance. These dates also ensure that there is sufficient time for learners to work with their teachers to maximise their chances of success.

IBDP Examinations 2023

The IB have published a provisional schedule for the May 2023 examinations which run between April 27th and May 19th. Please note Nexus has no control over these dates and they can run on public holidays.

Textbook Sale - 26th August

There will be a textbook sale in the Secondary Library on August 26 from 1:00 - 4:30. Year 12 learners are invited to stop by to purchase any textbooks they still need. We will hold a second sale early in September for learners in Year 10 and above to purchase any additional textbooks required.

Careers and University Notices

Year 13

As the Careers and University Counsellor, I wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to you at the beginning of Term 1 to provide you with an overview of key dates pertaining to university applications for your child in their final year at Nexus International School Singapore.

University guidance for your child began in Year 12 and will continue throughout Year 13. Each week I will hold university sessions with the whole year group on Friday mornings during tutor time. These sessions are an excellent opportunity for collaboration and discussions about application processes, key deadlines and any other information regarding ‘Life After Nexus’ for our learners. Additionally, I will soon begin 1:1 meetings with all Year 13 learners to discuss their progress using their individual university planner (set over the holidays).

Learners are required to request predicted grades, transcripts and letters of recommendation at least two weeks before their university admissions deadline. Therefore we would like to make you aware of certain deadlines related to University applications that have been shared with your children:

US Applications

Early applications (Early Decision and Early Action) for the US will be submitted at the start of November 2022. Other applications will be finalised from November 2022 - January 2023.

Canadian Applications

Early applications for Canadian universities will be submitted throughout November 2022 - admission deadlines differ between universities. Other applications will be finalised during Term 3.

Hong Kong Applications

Early applications to Hong Kong will be submitted by mid-November 2022 - dates vary depending on each individual university.

UK Applications (UCAS)

All learners applying to the UK will soon register with UCAS and begin working on their Personal Statements. An internal deadline of 5th December 2022 has been set to ensure that all applications are complete before the commencement of the December break.

As well as the above key dates, there will be separate deadlines for other institutions in these and other countries. Learners are responsible for managing their own application timelines.

More information will be made available soon about an upcoming university fair in September.

Year 12

To help with independent university research, all Year 12 learners will soon register with the university research platform, Cialfo, where they can access a range of resources including online testing such as ‘Do What You Are’; ‘Learning Styles’; and ‘Multiple Intelligences’. Writing reflections based on the results of these tests should help learners narrow their focus and select pathways that are most suited to their interests and abilities. This platform will also be used as an application platform by the learners applying to universities in the US. If parents would like to learn more about this platform, this short video is worth checking out.

Next term, we will commence our Year 12 Careers and University Programme with a focus on topics that will help them as they set out on their journeys towards life after Nexus. Each session takes a different focus and we will explore topics such as goal-setting, self-reflection and how to write stand-out college application essays. Sessions will also focus on admissions requirements and application processes pertaining to destinations all over the world such as the United States, UK, Canada, Japan, Singapore and Europe, to name but a few. Learners are reminded to check the Learner Bulletin every week to ensure that they are up-to-date with the latest information about online university fairs and events.

More information will be made available soon about an upcoming university fair in September.

Many thanks for your anticipated support in this process and, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at: massey.a@nexus.edu.sg

Best wishes,
