What it's all about:
During the week of the 22nd of August - 26 August the music team will be hosting our Instrumental Petting Zoo, where learners can come along and try out instruments. Each day we will have a selection of instruments ( flute, clarinet, violin, cello, guitar, piano) ready for learners to 'have a go' and see if they would possibly be interested in taking it further. Our music team, and instrumental tutors will happily help learners out and answer any questions you may have.
Please note even if you had lessons last academic year, you still need to enrol!
We provide a high quality Instrumental Music Programme that is designed to help develop your child’s passion and skills in all stages of their musical journey.

We have started the year with a bang; with limited restrictions we are able to sing, dance and make music together! The music classroom is a fun place to be and learners have got stuck in playing or singing music together. It has been wonderful to walk down the music corridor and see our learners embracing creativity, displaying confidence and being risk takers by trying something new.
This term is all about making music in our classroom and each year group will have a performing or creating focus. The units are listed below and for further details remember to follow SEASAW (Primary) and CANVAS (Secondary).
Nursery - Through fun music and movement activities, learners will explore various areas of musical elements(e.g. pitch, rhythm, duration, tempo, beat), learn instrument names and the way they sound, and learn to cooperate with others
Kindergarten - Learners will explore 5 senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste, touch) and how they are used when listening and responding to music. Applying all 5 senses, learners will identify a variety of timbre, pitch, duration, tempo and beat. In addition, learners will learn to use graphic symbols to notate a simple pieces of music
Year 1 - To assist with learners adjusting to a new learning environment, learners will participate in fun musical games to learn the basic musical vocabulary, elements of music and explore our responsibilities as part of a community/group.
Year 2 - Learners will explore and understand a variety of ways to notate music. Learners will focus on learning musical elements and ways to notate these using simple graphic score. In the end, learners will use graphic symbols to notate and create a simple piece of music as a group.
Year 3 - Learners explore a range of textures and timbres and rhythms; listening for and controlling changes in the music and being able to describe these using appropriate musical vocabulary.
Year 4 - To assist with the learners beginning the recorder, learning will be supported through the consolidation of musical notation. A main focus on reading semibreves, minims, crotchets, quavers and rests as well as the pitches C to C.
This unit will be taught through apps, worksheets and classroom games.
Year 5 - We are starting an 8 week unit which will explore the violin. This embeds on our unit from year 4 but also introduces the instrument to our new learners. Everyone will learn basic skills and build confidence in performing.
Year 6 - Learners explore the woodwind family further and learn how to play their first reed instrument - The Clarinet. Through playing, learners enhance their knowledge of musical notation, and have the opportunity to advance to other members of the woodwind family.
Year 7 - Our unit 'Symbols of Me' links Art, Music and Drama through our Statement of Inquiry; 'A composition can act as a story of our identity and our role in the community.' Learners have begun with singing and accompanying ourselves on the ukulele which will aid with creating a composition on Garageband.
Year 8 - 'Creativity Clash' in a collaborative MYP unit bringing together the Arts through our statement of inquiry 'Ideas can be expressed creatively'. Learners are exploring the Latin grooves of Samba music and will create and perform their own compositions.
Year 9 - We are exploring the roots of Blues music and how this has developed into jazz, rock n roll and beyond. A unit filled with research, creating and performing learners can select their instrument of choice as we play music in groups, individually or as a whole class.
Year 10 - Our new IGCSE cohort are starting the year with a collaborative ensemble performance.
Year 11 - Exploring World music is an essential part of the IGCSE course. Year 11 will begin with learning about Caribbean music with a particular exploration of Jamaica.
Year 12 - We soft start the year with solo performances, using our skills to explore, experiment and present out music.
Year 13 - Year 13 are in the midst of coursework completing their Experimenting module and beginning conversations with their instrumental tutors as they begin to decide on their presenting portfolio.
It was lovely to welcome new and old families and entertain you at last nights 'Welcome Evening'. Learners from Y3-13 volunteered to perform to our NEXUS community with some lovely informal background music. Thank you to all those involved and to the families who embraced our musicians and supported their performances. To practise and rehearse after such a long holiday every musician performed astoundingly.
