Self-advocacy

Self-advocacy can be defined in many ways and depending on the circumstances under which learning occurs.  Whether the student is a high achiever or struggles in academic situations, being able to speak up and receive the needed support necessary to achieve success is critically important.  Cited in Test et al., Strodden (2005), defines self-advocacy as the ability to articulate one's needs and make informed decisions about the supports necessary to meet those needs.  This is certainly true of any math learner!
