It was wonderful seeing so many families and children at Horace Mann's International Night! Everyone enjoyed learning about different countries, cultures, games, foods, music, dances, and more.

International Night 2018!
International Night 2018!
When: Friday, October 12, 6:00-7:30 pm
Where: Horace Mann Gym
Cost: Free
Who: All of us! - kids, family members, teachers....
International Night has grown to be a sizable, memorable and fun evening celebrating the diversity of Horace Mann. Most of us have roots in other countries and states far from Newton. International Night is an opportunity to share our cultures in many different ways.
The gym is transformed into a global fair with tables hosted by Horace Mann families - introducing food and cultural items from countries, states and cultures where they have roots, or are interested in. Children are given a passport so that they are encouraged to visit all countries and earn a prize.
We invite everyone to get involved:
Just attend!
- This is a relaxed, fun, festive, and crowded event!
Host a table!
- Families are invited to host tables to introduce food and cultural items from places where they have roots, have visited, and want to learn about.
- Go as big or as small as you want - some tables are really low-key, and others are events in themselves. Anything goes - just be prepared to be flexible, share a table, and have fun.
- Some ideas of things to bring: books, posters, pictures of the country/state, flag to hang, traditional clothing, game or art/craft, presentation/slideshow.
- Please also bring all supplies needed to "dress up" your table and to serve food: tablecloth, scissors, tape, markers, plates, cups, utensils, napkins, display cases, etc.
- There are very few electrical outlets in the gym, so please don't plan on plugging anything in.
Read a book!
- Do you have a children's picture book from your country, state or community, that you would like to share and read to Horace Mann kids? This year we will have a quiet reading room for kids and families. The reading room will be open all evening for quiet reading with your own child and for a part of the evening for read aloud to any interested kids. We’d love to have parents sign up to bring a favorite book and share it.
Dance, sing, play music!
- Perform a traditional dance or song. Play a special instrument.
- This year we are inviting families to share a short (no more than 5 minutes) dance or song at the end of the evening. You don’t have to be a pro – just willing to share a special part of your culture.
Volunteer help!
- It takes a (tiny) village to plan this event, promote, set it up, host and clean up.
- If you can help with setting up, assisting at the passport table, helping with the reading room, etc. for a part of the evening, please join us! We’re hoping to get enough volunteers that everyone will have plenty of time to also enjoy the evening and spend time with their children.

English Language Parent Advisory Council (ELPAC)
This volunteer council will meet six times a year to learn about and advise district education policies regarding English learners.
The council is for bilingual parents of all languages with students in grades PreK to 12.
Snacks will be provided. We will have interpreters available.
