Newton Medical Center's IP Network Expansion

With the addition of one-to-one devices at the high school students are bringing their devices to the Newton Medical Center facilities. The network was previously expanded to support additional devices but there are still more devices than were expected. So a second expansion is necessary. Expanding the network to support more devices will require an outage that will take down the entire network in the NMC building only.

Technical Details

The current wireless LAN is a 26-bit network supporting up to 60 devices/IP addresses. IP addresses are handed out with a 24-hour lease, so once a device gets an IP no other device may use it until it expires 24-hours afterwards. On occasion the pool of IP addresses have exceed 80% utilization or more. The plan is to expand the network to a 25-bit network supporting up to 124 devices during a 24-hour period.

The current IP network for the wireless is 172.24.128.0/26 (netmask 255.255.255.192) and the new network will be 172.24.128.0/25 (netmask 255.255.255.128).
