Degreeworks is the tool The New School uses to track your degree progress. A degree audit is a review of past, current, and in-progress coursework that provides information on completed and outstanding requirements necessary to complete your degree, major, minor, and concentration requirements when applicable.
BA/BFA students have two degree audit screens on Degreeworks - one for their BA degree and one for their BFA degree. This allows them to check that they are completing both degrees successfully. You can switch between the audits using the dropdown menu on the top right of your Degreeworks.
You are earning two separate degrees. Unlike a “double major,” where students complete two courses of study but earn one degree (i.e. a BA in History and English), you are literally completing two full degree programs - a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Courses may count in two different places depending on the degree. For this reason, it is actually quite useful to be able to see your progress towards each degree individually: you can plan more thoughtfully when you know how close you are towards a single degree.
There are a few BAFA-specific policies that affect both audits. For example:
BAFA students need to complete 168 (Lang/Parsons) or 180 (Lang/Jazz) credits total to be able to earn both degrees. This includes 90 credits of liberal arts, meaning courses that are coded as Liberal Arts in the New School system.
BAFA students only need to complete one ULEC course.
BAFA Lang/Parsons students have more general Art & Design History requirements than their non-BAFA peers, and this is reflected on their BFA Degree Audit.
Degreeworks counts your credits in several ways, but you should be sure to track three specific kinds of credits:
Overall credits completed: 168 required for Lang/Parsons and 180 required for Lang/Jazz. This will appear in both audits, in the Degree block under "Credits applied."
Liberal Arts credits completed: 90 required for all BAFA. Track this on your Bachelor of Arts audit, in the Degree block. If you have liberal arts credits remaining, you will see them listed under "Unmet Conditions for this requirement."
Studio credits completed: 78 required for Parsons; 90 required for Jazz. Track this on your Bachelor of Fine Arts audit. If you have studio credits remaining, you will see them listed under "Unmet Conditions for this requirement."
If you notice an error in Degreeworks, i.e. your departmental website indicates a certain course can count for a requirement but it is not applying in Degreeworks, contact your Academic Advisor with all relevant information (link to website, etc).
Forward the written departmental approval to your Academic Advisor; they can adjust manually in Degreeworks.
