Advanced course offerings

The philosophy and purpose of offering advanced courses at Neenah Middle School is to provide rigorous courses for all students who are interested in accelerating their coursework and are developmentally ready for increased academic rigor. Upon successful completion of advanced course offerings, students will have increased, accelerated access to upper level courses offered at Neenah High School.

Criteria for Eligibility:

Teacher Recommendation: Recommendations are made by 7th grade core academic teachers.

Families will receive communication to sign their student up for advanced courses at the conclusion of spring Parent/Teacher Conferences. Seventh-grade teachers will recommend students. In addition, staff & administrators will also use completed district administered testing scores to determine eligibility for advanced course enrollment. . It is recommended that parents seriously consider the teacher recommendation before enrolling their child in this course

compacted ELA 8/9

This rigorous course integrates elements of ELA 8 and English 9 for students who excel in English--specifically those who love to read and write and those with strong language skills. Learners analyze diverse texts including short stories, novels, drama, poetry, and informational pieces which serve as catalysts for various writing assignments including essays, narratives, argumentative pieces, and informational research-based texts. The program challenges participants through advanced language study, focusing on grammar, conventions, and usage while providing frequent public speaking opportunities and Socratic discussions.

Enrollment is based on seventh-grade teacher recommendations and review of district administered test scores. Parents should carefully consider teacher recommendations before enrollment.

Course Activities: The course will provide a variety of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language activities and tasks.

Length: 2 semesters/every day

U.S. Government and Politics

This course will provide an analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. Students will be involved in both the study of general concepts used to interpret U.S. political beliefs and the analysis of specific case studies. It will require familiarity with the various institutions, groups, parties, beliefs, and ideas that make up the U.S. political reality. Finally, it will challenge a student's ability to think abstractly and analyze material critically.
