Language Arts 5:
This course includes various reading and writing workshop units throughout the academic year. In writing workshops, students develop personal narratives; literary essays emphasizing opinion writing, theme, character analysis, and author’s craft; as well as research-based argument/informational essays and panel presentations. Students will also engage in journalism by crafting news articles. Reading instruction engages students through interpretation book clubs for theme analysis, fantasy, and nonfiction reading to explore main idea, summary, and inquiry projects. Grammar instruction will cover sentence structure, parts of speech, quoting texts, using commas and colons, and verb tense. Vocabulary and word study will include prefixes, suffixes, testing vocabulary, and exploring Greek and Latin roots.

Math 5:
This course focuses intensively on the three critical areas specified by the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in Grade 5. Students will develop fluency with fraction addition and subtraction, and understand fraction multiplication and division (limited to unit fractions and whole numbers). The curriculum also extends division to 2-digit divisors, integrates decimal fractions into the place value system (to hundredths), and develops fluency with whole number and decimal operations. Finally, students will develop an understanding of volume.

Art 4: This course is a meant for students to explore a wide range of techniques, materials and styles. Young artists will be learning to express themselves through drawing, painting, ceramics and mixed media. Students will learn about famous artists, practice critiques and develop problem-solving skills through open ended projects.
Art 5: In 5th-grade art, students will use creative expression and work on technical skills. Students will explore drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and metal tooling. Students will learn how to use the elements of art to design and communicate ideas. Students will study influential artists, analyze artwork and write about their own work. Projects will encourage critical thinking, personal voice and creativity.
Digital Literacy: In Digital Literacy, we will explore the following: basic functions of the Chromebook, district purchased apps, digital communication, and creating movies with AI imagery. This course will also introduce web/social media safety and fluency
Physical Education: Physical Education is a sequential educational program that teaches students how to: understand and participate in physical activities that can help them develop positive attitudes toward maintaining a healthy lifestyle; practice the lifetime skills of cooperation and successful interaction with other students; and understand and improve their health-related fitness and motor skills.
