Dear Families,
NCS students with IEPs are fortunate to work with a wide range of related service professionals in order to rise to their own best potential. Some of our related services are provided by members of our NCS team directly. Other services (such as OT, PT, and some counseling and speech-language services) are provided by contracted providers employed through related service agencies and the NYC Department of Education. NCS and the NYCDOE are committed to ensuring all related services are provided as uninterruptedly as possible via tele-therapy services during this period of remote learning!
In order to receive tele-therapy services, families must first give their consent. Providers will be making calls to obtain this consent from you. Specifically, you should be aware that:
Delivery of face-to-face services will not be possible during a school closure.
Services will be delivered via secure video conference to your child in their place of residence by a provider who will be located at a remote site.
You have the right to be informed of all parties who will be present at the tele-therapy session.
Some services you child receives may not be appropriate for delivery via tele-therapy.
There may be changes in the group size or frequency or services delivered via tele-therapy that differ slightly from the in-person recommendations currently in place on your child’s IEP.
You have the right not to consent to your child's participation in services delivered via tele-therapy.
There are two tele-therapy platforms approved for use through the NYCDOE, including Microsoft Team Meet and Google Hangouts/Meet. To the extent possible, we have recommended our providers schedule tele-therapy sessions via Google Hangouts/Meet. Invitations to therapy sessions will be sent by related service providers. Families should download Google's "Meet" app for iOS or Android in order to join into scheduled sessions. Sessions can also be joined by web browser.
To join the meeting, simply click on the "Join Hangouts Meet" link in the invitation. The will open in a separate web browser (Computer/Chromebook) or in the Hangouts Meet app (iOS and Android phones and tablets). Please see the attached tutorial for step-by-step instructions.
If you have any questions, or have not heard from your providers, please email the NCS SPED team at SPED@ncschools.org.
In health,
Stephanie Hubbell
