Introductions

An excellent introduction typically consists of three parts:

  1. Context or problem statement: A context is the real-world framework for a discussion of literature. If you can identify the way the idea of the story exists in the real world, then you engage the reader and demonstrate a strong understanding of the work. You also simplify the writing of the conclusion.
  2. Preview of essay content: The preview section identifies the main ideas that will be addressed in the body of your essay. This part of the intro is essential for effective organization of the body.
  3. Thesis: This is the controlling idea of the essay. It should advance an interpretation of the text by examining a relationship (for example, cause/effect, action/significance) that is essential to the story.
