Introductions
An excellent introduction typically consists of three parts:
- Context or problem statement: A context is the real-world framework for a discussion of literature. If you can identify the way the idea of the story exists in the real world, then you engage the reader and demonstrate a strong understanding of the work. You also simplify the writing of the conclusion.
- Preview of essay content: The preview section identifies the main ideas that will be addressed in the body of your essay. This part of the intro is essential for effective organization of the body.
- Thesis: This is the controlling idea of the essay. It should advance an interpretation of the text by examining a relationship (for example, cause/effect, action/significance) that is essential to the story.
