8th Grade G/T Field Trip to TSU - April 3, 2020

Mrs. Hunt, our Secondary G/T Facilitator, has this to say to our 8th Grade G/T students regarding their upcoming field trip to TSU:

Last year our tour group went through the campus tour really fast, mainly because we didn't have enough questions to ask the tour guides. Please take some time between now and April 3 to talk to your students about college life and help them think of questions they could ask while on the tour.

A good idea might be to have them set up their AP accounts here. They could also do research on possible scholarships, take career aptitude tests, have them research first year campus life like meal plans, on-campus living, choosing college majors, etc. This will help them generate questions and also get them thinking about their high school goals and career tracks too.

Below is the schedule for the day with us ending the tour at noon. From there we will eat at Harris Dining Hall then shop the campus bookstore before boarding the bus around 2:00. Please make sure students have paid for lunch by Friday [March 6] so we can get our check request as early as possible. Please let me know if you have any questions. THANK YOU!

Prizes:

• K-5th grade students can win a tablet or laptop!

• Grand Prize Winner: Laptop computer

• Remaining regional winners: Tablet computer

• Teacher of the student who designs the overall best artwork: Tablet computer

The grand-prize winner will also be invited to travel to Austin, along with their teacher, parent, or guardian, to be recognized by the TCEQ Commissioners and a Texas Chemical Council representative at the 2020 Environmental Trade Fair and Conference.

From TAGT: "All parents want their children to be successful. But parents of gifted children often feel an added pressure to unleash their child's "full potential." This webinar will give parents of gifted children powerful, but practical tools to understand the harms of the "full potential" myth and practical tools to move towards a more healthy, hopeful, and happy path to set children up to excel."

7th Grade G/T Competition

Summary: Competition: Tuesday, March 26th - Please bring $10 by early March for lunch from Jason's Deli.

From Mrs. Hunt at ORMS:

In order to prepare for the 7th grade G/T Competition on Tuesday, March 26 at the Westside Community Center students have been working on learning how to do 3D printing design on Tinkerkad, Instant Challenges/Minute to Win It Games, Lego Robotics and at the beginning of March they will tackle their last section for competition, which is Lego STEM Kits. The competition is closed to parent/community spectators, but we will share everything we did at the parent G/T Expo in April.

The lunch options for the G/T Competition Field Trip on March 26 are either a lunch box from Jason's Deli with a turkey sandwich OR veggie wrap and a drink. It's $10 due by Friday, March 8 if your child chooses a Jason's Deli lunch. If they do not want that, please make plans to pack them a lunch that day.

VR headsets bring the sights and sounds of faraway places to our kids. (They're also really fun to observe from a teacher's perspective, lol)
