Physical Education Electives

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING I

Grades 9 - 12

PE51 - ½ Credit - ½ Year

This is a beginners course that is designed for students who are interested in improving their fitness through strength and conditioning. Students will learn proper lifting techniques and follow designed workouts. Emphasis is placed on safety procedures and proper execution of a variety of movements. This class is for all students that are interested in strength and conditioning.


STRENGTH & CONDITIONING II

Grades 9 - 12

PE51B - ½ Credit - ½ Year

Prerequisite: PE51

This is a course that is designed for students who have completed Strength & Conditioning I. Students will learn proper lifting techniques and follow designed workouts. Emphasis is placed on safety procedures and proper execution of a variety of movements. This class is for all students that are interested in strength and conditioning.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

PE52 - ½ Credit - ½ Year

Prerequisite: By teacher approval

This is an advanced course that is designed for students who have excelled in strength and conditioning and want a more challenging experience. Students will continue to learn advanced lifting techniques and follow workouts designed to meet personal needs. Emphasis is placed on safety procedures and proper execution of a variety of exercises.

Teacher recommendation is required.

YOGA & RELAXATION I

Grades 9 - 12

PE53 - ½ Credit - ½ Year

Fight stress and find serenity. Yoga is a mind/body practice that combines physical poses, controlled breathing and meditation or relaxation. Yoga may help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and heart rate. Keeping muscles in a constant alert state expends a great amount of energy, which then is unavailable when your muscles are called upon to really function. Students will participate in yoga and relaxation activities.

YOGA & RELAXATION II

PE53B - ½ Credit - ½ Year

Prerequisite: This class is for those who have taken Yoga and Relaxation 1.

LIFETIME ACTIVITIES

Grades 9 - 12

PE54 - ½ Credit - ½ Year

Tennis, pickleball, ultimate Frisbee, softball, flag football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton & indoor soccer. These activities are often a choice for lifetime physical activity. All classes will begin with 10 minutes of dynamic warm-up and stretching and conclude with 10 minutes of cool down stretching. During this course, students will learn the components of skill development, participation, fitness, specific training guidelines, game strategies, fundamentals and rules of play. Tournament play will be included. Effort, attitude, and teamwork is the name of the game!

FITNESS FOR FEMALES

Grades 9 - 12

PE56 - ½ Credit - ½ Year

This class is designed for all levels of fitness. A variety of activities are included to make fitness fun! The training will focus on goal setting, positive self image and overall fitness. The use of Keiser air compression and cardio machines, free weights, kettlebells, medicine balls, physio balls, and strength training bands will all be incorporated in this class. This course may be repeated.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

Grades 9 - 12

PE58 - ½ Credit - ½ Year

Do you like to be active outside? If so, this is the class for you! This is a semester-long course that will take place outside every day possible. Activities include: Outdoor Adventure High Challenge Course, mountain biking, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding, beach walks and hiking. Students are transported in a school van to various local hiking trails in the National Seashore and Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Indoor activities in inclement weather will include indoor climbing walls and various aerobic activities. A highlight in the past for this course includes a full day field trip to the Provincetown Dunelands. This course is active, creative and fun. If you like adventure, this is for you!

ADAPTIVE PE WITH BEST BUDDIES

PE60 - ½ Credit - ½ Year

Interested in Physical Education AND working with students with special needs? Then this class is for you! Work closely with the teacher to develop fun and interactive PE lessons for yourselves and your peers with special needs. Special attention will be paid to individual needs, both physical and cognitive and the levels of motor development.


This is a great inclusive class that bridges the gaps between the various student populations and brings everyone together through exercise and fitness. If you are already a member of Best Buddies or would like to be, this is the perfect elective for you!

INTRODUCTION TO ATHLETIC TRAINING: PREVENTION and CARE

(not approved by NCAA I & II)

PE59 - ½ Credit - ½ Year – Spring (for grades 10, 11 & 12 only)

This class is designed for sophomore, junior and senior students interested in studying allied health professions such as athletic training, physical and occupational therapy, nursing, and emergency medical services. Instruction will be based on an overview of the six domains of athletic training which include prevention, treatment, evaluation and rehabilitation of athletic injuries in conjunction with health care administration and professional responsibility. The primary focus will involve prevention of athletic injuries through class lectures, labs, and ten observation hours after school. There is also an opportunity to become certified in CPR, AED, Epipen, and Inhaler administration through the American Red Cross.

ADVANCED ATHLETIC TRAINING: EVALUATION OF ATHLETIC INJURIES

(not approved by NCAA I & II)

PE59A - ½ Credit - ½ Year – Fall (for grades 11 & 12 only)

Prerequisites: Introduction to Athletic Training; First Aid & CPR Certification

This class is designed for junior and senior students interested in studying the fields of athletic training, physical therapy, or occupational therapy. Instruction will be a 1/2 year that focuses on the evaluation process of athletic injuries. Objectives include taping and bracing, clinical and on the field evaluation procedures, and an overview of upper and lower extremity anatomy and injuries. Coursework will include in-class lectures, labs, and 20 observation hours after school.
