Dancing with the Stars is a reality style show merging celebrities and dancers. The premise of the show is to combine two different worlds: stardom and dancing. At the start of a season, one celebrity and one professional dancer are paired together for the remainder of the season. Each week, the professional dancer will choreograph a ballroom style dance for the celebrity to learn. At the end of the weekly episode, one pair will be eliminated based on the judges scores and the viewers' votes. Dancing with the Stars is all about improving dance technique and fan interaction, as well as having a great piece of drama to watch every Tuesday.
Dancing with the Stars has been going on since 2005 and has 32 full seasons in addition to the current 33rd season in production. When the show first premiered, it was in association with ABC Network. However, ABC is currently owned by Disney and the show is mainly viewed from Disney Plus. This switch has deterred viewers from watching because of the streaming service’s overpriced subscriptions. Many viewers also stopped watching Dancing with the Stars because of the evolution of the show and how repetitive it had gotten, as well as the switch between streaming services and companies.
How much did this viewership decline? When the show first premiered on June 1st 2005, there were over 13 million people tuned into the show. For the 32nd season premiere in 2023, the show gathered 4.97 million viewers. In less than 20 years, there was about a 62% decrease in viewers. The rate of decline within only 20 years shows how unstable the show is. Dancing with the Stars is built on a concept you can only do so much. After a while, watching old guys and peppy actors try to dance, and do it badly, gets tiring. Still, there's a sense of nostalgia that keeps people watching.
Currently, the 33rd season of Dancing with the Stars is under way. This season has become mainstream due to the star-studded cast. Some people worth mentioning are Stephen Nedoroscik and Ilona Maher, who became American sweethearts after winning bronze Olympic medals for the United States. Anna Delvey, a known convict popularly recognized for her show Inventing Anna, is another notable cast member thanks to her sassy attitude and bedazzled ankle monitor. This season has Olympians, divas, reality tv stars, athletes, and famous actors. This cast has proven to be quite the center of media attention; controversy and admiration on the show has blown up on the social media platform Tik Tok. This season, the premiere collected about 7.32 million viewers, almost doubling the amount the 32nd season premiere acquired.
Some topics appearing into mainstream media include secret showmances shared between the cast, unfair judging, and overall the public's opinions of the 33rd season. All of these events have proved worthy enough to be considered conversation within mainstream media. The new season of Dancing with the Stars has been filled with drama, iconic quotes, and many moments that have struck people’s opinions on social media. All of this has pulled more and more viewers into Dancing with the Stars. The casting choices and drama are the main reason the show has gained revenue.
This new season of Dancing with the Stars has launched this reality TV show back into the spotlight. The production's casting choices have interested many people across the globe even before the premiere. Dancing with the Stars has found a new audience. However, will it stay that way? Will the current audience stay tuned in for the 34th season? This new found audience and popular season could make or break Dancing with the Stars. But it is safe to say that the show has been revived for now.
