2024 is just about to wrap up, and 2025 is approaching. 2024 delivered a lot of movies that were crafted expertly, while others were not as good, so let's take a look at what 2025 will bring to the table.
Let’s begin with some superhero movies. Starting off early in the year, we have Captain America: Brave New World. Some notable cast additions are Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, and Giancarlo Esposito. The film is set to release on February 14th. As we approach the summer, we have two notable hero films releasing weeks from each other; both are famous characters who have been due for another film. First up, we have Superman, directed by James Gunn. It has been over 10 years since Superman has had a solo movie on the big screen. This film is set to be the start of a new cinematic universe for DC, so there is much anticipation for Superman to swoop into theaters on July 11th. Two weeks after that, we have another film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, from Marvel, about their first ever family. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach star as the four heroes. The film is set to release on July 25th.
Now, let’s take a look at the action genre. The summer is packed full of action releases, so it is sure going to be an exciting time! First up is Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. This is set to be the last film in the long franchise that started back in 1996. Since then, they have released seven films over 20 years, and this is the 8th and final one. Tom Cruise will play the character of Ethan Hunt for one last time as Mission Impossible lands into theaters May 23rd. Next up, there is Tron: Ares, a sequel to Tron: Legacy. It is set to be another thrilling ride, since Jared Leto will be starring in the film along with Jeff Bridges and Greta Lee. The film is set to release on October 10th. Lastly, there’s Avatar: Fire and Ash. Fire and Ash is the third installment of the Avatar franchise that has been known for its astounding visuals and its ridiculous box office numbers. James Cameron returns to direct this film with a release date of December 19th.
Let’s now take a look at upcoming video game adaptations, the current trend in Hollywood. First up, we have a film that has been in the works for over a decade: Minecraft is finally getting a film adaptation, titled A Minecraft Movie. The film stars Jason Momoa and features Jack Black as the famous protagonist Steve. The film is set to build its way into theaters on April 4th. Next up, Mortal Kombat II, a sequel to the film that was released in 2021, is coming to theaters. The film stars Karl Urban and releases on October 24th. Lastly, there is another sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, starring Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard, which is coming out on December 5th.
Finally, there are some innocent and friendly animated movies. Very early in the year, there is a Dreamworks film based on the famous children's book series Dog Man. The film features Pete Davidson and Lil Ray Howery as some of the prominent voices. The film rushes into theaters on January 31st. Next up, Pixar is releasing a new original titled Elio, a film about a child that stumbles upon a government featuring the leaders of all of the planets throughout the universe. The film comes out on June 13th. Lastly, there is a most anticipated sequel to a well-known Disney modern classic, Zootopia 2. The original cast and crew return for a fun ride as the film hits theaters on November 26th.
Overall, there are some exciting films to look forward to for the upcoming year of 2025. There is a lot to be excited about; a lot of fun adaptations and exciting thrills await us in the new year. We’ll just have to watch in our seats, munching on some delicious popcorn, and see how it all goes.
