The Water’s Curse, Chapter 1
By Varsha Ashokraja
“Twisting and turning way of the day, please be careful if you may, don’t go dancing and prancing out to sea, cause when come back there is nothing to see, she is evil I’m telling you, evil as stone, she has no heart, and that is why she has no bones, she is worse than a ghost and worser than a demon, watch out before you go sailing or you’ll be beaten, she is a vampire, a blood sucking beast, she kills all the sailors before they can leave, she emerges out of spider’s shadow, and never goes to the shallow, children O children wait before you go, remember this song and decide so, the sailor remember her by Dabria. This is a song to sing with me, not alone and not with bees.”
“Ok children time to go to bed” said Captain Shark (James ZedAfore Shark and captain for now)
“Grandpa James can you tell us the story about how you escaped Dabria?”asked Will.
“No, Will!” I shouted!
Will is my younger brother, he is only 9 years old. He is turning 10 years in October. He believes anything my family and I utter. I don’t believe in ghosts, vampires, or demons. That's why I concluded that Grandpa is making this up. And yes, Captain Sharks is my Grandpa James, but his last name is the funniest name ever. My last name isn’t Sharks it is Biella, Annabella Biella. Just please call me Bella.
Back to the point.
Grandpa claims that he was on a boat when he was 16 with a captain named Jaya who is a legend. But I didn’t think he was a legend because Grandpa said he died within the boat. Lame, he could have jumped too. Grandpa said this was the first time he encountered Dabria.
Grandpa’s story starts like any other; there was a girl once named Mia and she was the prettiest girl on land. A captain, Captain Deathbed, once told her that she is going to see the beautiful wonder called France. But instead of taking her to France they killed her on the way. Grandpa said the reason was because she wasn’t high class. The (made up) death was horrendous. Mia was allegedly killed by the sailors beating her up with poles, hanging her by her feet. Blood dripped down her pale white skin. Snow White, I thought. Tied up to a rod that was attached to the anchor, tossed aside like a rag, she waited days before they hit land. The captain got off and ordered the ship to turn around and drop the anchor in shallow water so that Mia would be crushed. The men followed as he dememed. Mia kicked, screamed, and pleaded for mercy, but these men’s hearts were sealed. Dropped in the sea, Mia tried and struggled to come out, but she died 7 minutes after she was thrown in.
Her spirit rose from the icy blue waters and she cursed the families of all the sailors aboard. The curse went like;
“I Mia, solemnly swear to bring vengeance and death to all the doors of these men for the next 700 years. I will now be Dabria the Deadly, run sailors run, I will show no mercy as you did with me. Survivors, if any, warn your fellow sailors of my wreath as you won’t be alive for long.”
Do you now see why I think this is B.S.? I think Grandpa didn’t have any good stories from the sea and made up this rubbish to frighten us.
Back to present day…
“Fine, I’ll tell it again, but you have to listen carefully,” Grandpa said.
