The group that makes decisions for the WHO regarding health policy in the African region is the Regional Committee for Africa. It is made up of health ministers or their deputies from each of the 47 member states in the region. As stated in Article 50 of the WHO Constitution, the primary responsibilities of the Regional Committee are establishing regional policies and managing the regional office. Additionally, the Committee sends its nomination for the Regional Director for Africa to the WHO Executive Board for approval every five years. The Regional Director serves as the committee's secretary, and the Regional Committee typically meets in August of each year.
These are policies or rules to ensure that the operations of the Regional Committee are still in line with the WHO but give it necessary freedoms to govern certain circumstances without need for approval from the Headquarters.
