The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, agreed upon by all UN Member States in 2015, is a shared plan to create peace and prosperity for people and the planet now and in the future. Its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) call on every country, whether rich or poor, to work together through global partnerships. These goals emphasize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with improving health, education, reducing inequality, spurring economic growth, tackling climate change, and protecting our oceans and forests. The Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) in UNDESA plays a vital role by supporting, building capacity for, and evaluating progress on the SDGs, while also promoting partnerships and advocacy. In short, the SDGs are designed to unite all stakeholders in a strong, collective effort to achieve a sustainable, just, and healthy world by 2030

Goal 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development
The purpose of the Agenda is twofold. First, it is designed to catalyze meaningful action by providing clear targets and indicators that governments, organizations, and other stakeholders can use to measure progress toward a more resilient and prosperous future for all. Second, it offers an integrated approach to addressing the complex, multidimensional challenges of our time—from economic disparities and social injustice to environmental degradation and climate change. By embedding issues like climate change and sustainable consumption into its framework, the 2030 Agenda ensures that efforts to improve human well-being go hand-in-hand with the stewardship of the planet.
In relation to the UN, the Agenda reinforces the United Nations’ role as a convener and facilitator of international cooperation. It guides the work of various UN agencies and divisions—such as the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) within UNDESA, UNDP, UNICEF, and others—by aligning their strategies and operational plans with the globally agreed targets. This coordinated framework not only enhances the UN's capacity to provide substantive support and capacity-building but also ensures that the implementation of the SDGs becomes a truly collective and transformative process. In essence, the 2030 Agenda crystallizes the UN’s mandate to foster an inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable world, urging both national governments and international partners to implement policies that leave no one behind.
Mr. Juwang Zhu leads the Division for Public Institutional and Digital Government, where he is dedicated to developing inclusive, effective, and accountable institutions that can drive progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions. In addition to this role, he serves as the Acting Director of the global secretariat for the 17 SDGs under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this capacity, Mr. Zhu plays a key role in providing substantive support and integrated policy analysis, as well as in building multi-stakeholder partnerships and capacity development.
