When the previous National Department of Education was divided into the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Higher Education and Training, the Department of Basic Education was created. The DBE oversees all educational institutions from kindergarten through grade 12, including adult literacy programs. The DBE's mission is to create, preserve, and promote a South African schooling system fit for the twenty-first century.
Our goal is to create a South Africa where everyone has access to chances for lifelong learning, education, and training. This will enhance people's quality of life and help to create a country that is peaceful, wealthy, and democratic.
Our goal is to drive the development of the South African educational system for the 21st century.(Education.gov.za, 2019)

Bridging gaps in education, as outlined in South Africa's National Development Plan (NDP), is closely aligned with the Department of Basic Education's (DBE) Action Plan. This plan, titled Action Plan to 2024: Towards the Realisation of Schooling 2030, emphasizes improving the quality of education and addressing disparities within the schooling system. It highlights key priorities such as equitable distribution of resources, infrastructure development in under-resourced areas, and strengthening teacher training programs.
The DBE Action Plan also focuses on inclusive education, ensuring that learners with disabilities or special needs receive appropriate support. It incorporates measures to improve curriculum implementation and integrate technology into classrooms to prepare students for the demands of a modern economy. By targeting these critical areas, the DBE Action Plan contributes to bridging gaps and supports the broader vision of the NDP—reducing poverty and inequality through accessible and quality education.
