Jisc Digital Capabilities Framework
At an individual level, Jisc define digital capabilities as those which equip someone to live, learn and work in a digital society.
What it means to be digitally capable will vary for each person. It will depend on the requirements of their role, their subject specialism, career choice, personal and other contextual factors. The Digital capabilities framework looks more closely at what this means.
The six elements of this framework are:
Digital proficiency and productivity (functional skills)
Information, data and media literacies (critical use)
Digital creation, problem solving and innovation (creative production)
Digital communication, collaboration and participation (participation)
Digital learning and development (development)
Digital identity and wellbeing (self-actualising)
The Jisc discovery tool is an online self-assessment questionnaire to help with evaluation of and reflection on your digital capabilities, helping you to identify strengths and areas for development. By answering the questions, you will be made aware of digital practices that you already have, and new ones you can develop.
The discovery tool can be used by staff and students as a stand-alone tool, or in conjunction with role profiles to provide context. The digital skills development tool also contains additional role specific questions which can be accessed via the question bank.
For managers, it’s a great way to frame ongoing development conversations around developing digital skills using a common language. Individual reports can also be generated and used, with permission from the owner, to structure these conversations.
Staff or students wishing to measure digital skills – either as a baseline before starting conversations, development planning or to re-assess your capabilities once you have started developing your skills.
Staff or students wanting to identify individual digital skills strengths and areas for development, to use as the basis of a development path
Lecturers or guidance tutors - to guide and equip students as they prepare for the digital world
