The Academy of Finance is one of two Programs of Emphasis at Lake Brantley High School. In coordination with the National Academy Foundation, Addition Financial, and our Program Advisory Council, the Academy of Finance offers students one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn the principles, skills, and mindsets necessary to be successful in the field in college and beyond.
The Academy offers students three possible tracks to advanced coursework: Business Finance, Accounting, and Global Finance. All three tracks begin with the same two courses. See the course progression shown below for the similarities and differences between the tracks.
In this first course of the Academy of Finance, students learn the foundational principles to Finance, including financial literacy, understanding wealth, examining financial institutions, and the ins-and-outs of investment. A substantial portion of the class is dedicated to the software and information systems used in the management of financial institutions and their processes.
In these courses, students learn the principles and processes of the field of Accounting, including ledger and record-keeping, ethics and legal issues, and accounting troubleshooting. QuickBooks software is the basis for this instruction. Students who complete this sequence of courses will be far ahead of their peers pursuing post-secondary credentials and careers in Accounting.
In these courses, students learn the complexities of the financial services industry as a foundation for a career in Business Finance. These courses cover a wide variety of topics critical to the understanding of Finance and Business Management, including banking, investments, entrepreneurship, corporate operations, and financial system software. Students who complete this sequence of courses will have valuable skills to take with them to either collegiate business studies or directly into the finance and banking industry.
Through these courses in the Global Finance Track, students will open their minds and potential to the world of international trade and transcontinental corporations. Students will learn about corporate leadership, international markets, and trade practices. Students who complete this sequence of courses will be prepared to continue their studies of Global Finance at the university level.
Students enrolled in the Academy of Finance are eligible to apply and interview for a teller position in the on-campus Brantley Branch of Addition Financial. Interested students complete an application in the Spring. Highly-qualified students are then offered interviews with the Addition Financial Human Resources Department. Once selected, students are required to attend a one-week summer training course offered at the Addition Financial offices in Lake Mary.
Additionally, Global Finance students will have the opportunity to pursue internships with our Industry Business Partners in the field of Global Finance.
