SPRING 2020
EDGR 650 Learning & Development
Through this course, we had the opportunity to look through traditional theories of education and learning, strength-based learning, curiosity, and creativity. We also dove into what can be seen as learning barriers, such as poverty, stress, individual learning differences, and other environmental concerns. This work allowed a deeper understanding of neurodevelopment and the eight categories/constructs: attention, higher order cognition, language, memory, neuromotor, social cognition, spatial ordering, and temporal sequential ordering. These eight constructs were practiced in class and we were able to build our identification skills to best assess what was needed in the moment to help students see and feel success. Finally, we finished the course with a focus on Universal Design and Understanding by Design to create plans to use in our classrooms.
I decided to share my monthly reflections and final lesson plan for this course. The monthly reflections are opportunities to see my growth mindset throughout the class and to see my understanding and application grow, not to be an expert but to seek out new opportunities to learn about my students and their needs. My final lesson plan is based on a whole-class novel project and a summative based on themes. The constructs that I applied to this final is attention, temporal sequential ordering, memory, language, neuromotor, social cognition, and higher order cognition. I then demonstrated the supports that were placed in class and how they would support different levels of learning as well as how I wished to motivate my students throughout the project.
