Overview: For my final project, I decided to go back to one of my older Graphic Design assignments, which was my Coca-Cola Hawai‘i poster. My original design was based on the phrase “No Potholes, Just Aloha and Coke,” and it included Hawai‘i scenery with Coca-Cola branding. When I looked back at it, I felt like the idea was still interesting, but I could improve the way it looked using what I learned in class.
Instead of only redoing the same poster, I decided to connect it with the brand collaboration project too. I created a Coca-Cola x Hawaiian Airlines collab because both brands relate to travel, refreshment, and Hawai‘i. This helped me take my original Coca-Cola idea and turn it into a more complete advertisement. I also added the idea of a special Hawai‘i-themed Coca-Cola bottle and can that would only be served on Hawaiian Airlines flights.
For the design, I used sunset colors, ocean views, airplane imagery, and tropical details to create a warm travel feeling. I wanted the poster to feel like something that could possibly be seen in an airport or on a flight. The tagline “Aloha Served Cold” connects the refreshing feeling of Coca-Cola with the feeling of Hawai‘i.
I also made a short video ad to go along with the poster. For the video, I decided to have the woman looking out at the sunset because I wanted it to feel calm, peaceful, and connected to the experience of flying into Hawai‘i. I kept the video simple with music and text so the visuals could speak for themselves.
One thing I noticed is that the text style in the video is not exactly the same as the poster. I know it would have been stronger if the typography matched more closely, but the poster was created in Vizcom, so it was hard to recreate the exact same text style in the video. Even though it is not perfect, I tried to keep the same overall message and feeling so both pieces still worked together as one campaign.
Another small detail I noticed was that toward the end of the video, the Coke bottle kind of looked like a volcano because of the warm sunset lighting behind it. I did not fully plan that at first, but I thought it connected well to Hawai‘i and made the image feel more dramatic.
Everything was made using Vizcom and CapCut. I used Vizcom to create the poster and visuals, then used CapCut to edit the short ad, add music, and put the final pieces together. Overall, this project helped me see how much a design can change when the idea, colors, layout, branding, and motion work together. I was able to revisit an older assignment and improve it by combining it with another project from class.
