The Moon Festival is a special time for many families in Asia to come together, admire the full moon, and give thanks for the harvest. In my class, I took this opportunity to help students understand the importance of the festival, focusing on themes like family, unity, and gratitude.
I also introduced key vocabulary words related to the celebration:
Pomelo – a large citrus fruit that symbolizes good luck and family unity
Lantern – a bright decoration that lights up the night and represents hope
Barbecue – a common way families celebrate by cooking and eating together outdoors
Mooncake – a traditional pastry shared to express love and blessings
Full moon – symbolizing completeness and reunion
In addition, we focused on the use of prepositions: in, on, above, and under — helping students describe positions and places related to festival items like pomelos, lanterns and mooncakes. To make learning more active, we played an Amazing Race: Moon Festival Edition! Students raced through fun challenges that tested their knowledge of the vocabulary and prepositions. Sharing here the mechanics. Feel free to modify!
The class is divided into 5 groups. Each group has 4 members and there are 4 stations. The group needs to choose who will go to each station. Once in their station, students put their hands on their backs and wait for their turn. If they complete the task, they move the flag to the next table/station.
The timer starts once the teacher says, GO.
Station 1 : Vocabulary
Match the words with the correct pictures.
Once done correctly, move the flag to the next table or station. Once the flag is put on the next station, the next student can start the task.
Station 2 : Mooncake and Table
Pick a paper. Read the sentence aloud. Then, demonstrate it using the preposition correctly.

It was surely a fun, energetic way to reinforce learning while building teamwork and excitement. The activity was a perfect mix of culture, language, and movement!
