Student Centered Practices

Ways I Teach my Students Responsibility:

  • Allow all students to have a jobs in the classroom
  • Provide group projects where all students are involved in each part
  • Each week, at book club meetings, a new leader is choose that runs the discussion in the next week
  • Allow students to tutor or help others in an areas where they are experts
  • Teach digital citizenship and online etiquette
  • Use I-messages to solve conflicts
  • Encourage students to have academic, work study, and social skills goals
  • Student led conferences in December and March

Ways my Students are Involved in Decision Making:

  • Involve students in creating class rules and consequences
  • Allow students to have choices in what they can do for a summative assessment (see example below)
  • Provide opportunities for them to learn about a topic that interests them through an independent study
  • Involve students in solving problems in the classroom, rather than solving myself
  • Involve students in deciding on classroom environment and layout
  • Allow students to make choices on where they sit
  • Social skills lessons: peer pressure, ethical situations, etc.
  • Classroom economy system teaches students how to decisions regarding money, purchasing, etc.
