I am the Subject Group Lead for Occupational Therapy, Dietetics and Art Therapy at Sheffield Hallam University and Course Leader for MSc Dietetics (Pre-registration). I joined the university five years ago to set up the new Dietetics Course having held similar roles at Leeds Beckett University for 15 years-the opportunity to develop a new course from scratch was too good to miss!
Originally from Southampton, I first became interested in dietetics by sitting next to a friend at school with type 1 diabetes and learnt first-hand about diabetes management before undertaking some work based learning at the Southampton General Hospital via my A level- Food and Nutrition teacher whose sister-in-law was the Dietetic Services Manager! Dietetics enabled me to integrate all my interests in people, science, nutrition and health and led to a stimulating and challenging job where no one day is ever the same!
I graduated from Leeds Beckett University and gained Health & Care Professions Council registration, working as Dietitian in the NHS for 15 years. Having worked in many specialities across London Teaching Hospitals then in Leeds Community, my particular area of expertise is in working with communities affected by HIV/AIDS and other vulnerable groups across public and 3rd sector organisations. I also have an interest in Diabetes and have supported Diabetes UK in leading young people's residential educational holidays for some fourteen years prior to my son being diagnosed with T1D at 7 years old and starting on an insulin pump- so appreciate service user/carer and professional perspectives on care. Along the way I have completed postgraduate study at Southbank University London, gained a postgraduate certificate in Higher Education from Leeds Beckett University and Senior fellowship with the Higher Education Academy. I have held national roles with the British Dietetic Association and for UK wide Pre-registration Education commissioners and maintain a strong interest in the education and professional development of Dietitians.
Within the course I teach mainly on the following modules:- Dietetic Practice in Long Term Conditions, Professional Practice- including communication skills and behaviour change and preparation and reflection on practice learning, Evaluating Research Methodologies, Creating Original Practice and Complexities in Dietetic Practice and lead on Placement Co-ordination. Alongside teaching I am currently completing a professional doctorate (EdD) conducting a narrative inquiry with postgraduate alumni exploring how values are shaped and enacted in post-registration dietetic practice. I also have a research interest in Transitions in Higher Education and how we can better support students entering master’s study. I am always the most inspired by the journey our students undertake and their achievements as well as the contribution they make to our profession in post-registration practice.
Outside of work (although there isn't alot of this when you're writing up a doctorate!) I enjoy swimming, basketball my son plays at elite level and enjoy watching City of Leeds Basketball Academy play and love anything creative- especially live theatre and good food!
I grew up in Leicestershire and moved to Leeds to do my BSc Hons Dietetics. As the eldest of 3 siblings this was a daunting prospect and I was the first of my family to embark on such a journey! After graduating I have lived in Halifax for 28 years.
I have worked in Manchester, Halifax and Leeds as a dietitian and senior lecturer before moving to work in Sheffield. I completed both my PGCHE and MSc in Advanced Nutrition in Leeds whilst working as a Senior Lecturer part-time there.
My main areas of speciality in clinical dietetics are Diabetes and Hepatology including Liver transplants. I also have expertise in Gastroenterology particularly coeliac disease, IBD and IBS. I joined the team at Sheffield Hallam in May 2019.
I am module lead for the Applied Nutrition Support and Complexity in dietetic Practice modules but also provide expertise on other modules too (Professional Practice, Understanding Complexity in Practice, Nutrition and Food Composition) as part of my part-time post. I also visit students on placement in Doncaster, Barnsley Community and Rotherham.
I particularly enjoy preparing students for their placement experience and supporting their journey to their first Dietetic post.
I have 20 years’ experience as a senior lecturer in dietetics and have always combined this with a part-time clinical post. Initially in Palliative Care then, Hepatology, more recently in inpatient diabetes and currently in elderly care with NHS Sheffield CCG

My family are originally from Manchester but I have lived in many places. When I was 14 we moved to the Republic of Ireland where I completed my formal secondary education before starting my BSc (Hons) in Human Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (now Cardiff Metropolitan University).
As a newly qualified Dietitian I worked in a small district general hospital in Lancashire and undertook post graduate study in nutrition support before moving to Sheffield to take up a post in Rotherham where I started to specialise in this area of clinical dietetics. I have worked in various areas including haematology, critical care, head and neck cancer and home enteral feeding.
I joined Sheffield Hallam University in 2019 whilst still working clinically at the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust as Nutritional Prescribing Lead where my role was part management and clinical, jointly overseeing a department of 30 dietitians. I managed a dietetic led prescribing service across the Rotherham area having budgetary responsibility for nutritional prescribable products for example enteral tube feeds, oral nutritional supplements, gluten free foods and specialised infant formulas. This service gained national and international recognition.
I completed my Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education gaining fellowship to the Higher Education Academy. At this point I made the decision to focus on my academic and teaching career. I teach on many of the course modules including Nutrition and Food Composition, Applied Nutrition Support and elements of the Integrated Care Curriculum. I am also module lead for Leadership in Public Health Nutrition. As Year 2 lead I enjoy preparing students for their future dietetic careers; it is very rewarding and a privilege to develop the future workforce. Working with students is the best part of the job!
Outside of work I enjoy being in the outdoors with my 3 children, walking and visiting many of the lovely cafes. Having the Peak District on our doorstep is one of the bonuses of living in Sheffield!
Hello. I’m Lucie. I was born (& now live) in Sheffield and know lots of places to eat so please ask me for recommendations!
I left Sheffield after my A-levels to undertake my BSc (Hons) Food Science course at the University of Reading where I discovered my passion for nutrition. After completing this degree, I moved to Leeds and studied MPhil in Diabetes whilst working on a KTP scheme in the food industry. I then started my PG Dip in Dietetics at the then Leeds Met University before graduating and completing an MSc in Advanced Dietetic Practice at the University of Nottingham.
As a senior lecturer, I develop and deliver teaching on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate nutrition modules, and aim to make complex physiological information become understandable for my students, providing a solid basis upon which we can build. My main roles include lecturing in areas such as nutrition, nutritional health, disease states and physiology. I also support students who are completing their final year undergraduate projects and MSc dissertations.
I am a qualified state-registered dietitian and have previously worked in the NHS as a dietitian in both community and acute settings; more recently as a senior weight management dietitian, supporting patients with morbid obesity. In my role as a specialist weight management dietitian, I worked in a patient-centred way to support patients with their complex co-morbidities. I bring this experience into my teaching and research.
I have a particular research interest in obesity management, diabetes, and the impact of diet during pregnancy. I am also keen to explore the relationship between obesity and malnutrition and am planning work around food poverty and the use of food banks. I am currently working with ShefFood to try and get Sheffield to become a recognised Sustainable Food City.
